Prototype Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- New Update 5/17/2011

Here is the final version of the first prototype. This is more proof of concept than final product.

Here are the changes that will be in the second prototype.

The stand will be clear. It was suppposed to be that way in the first version, but the shop misunderstood.

The Seal will be in black, frosted, or (depending on price) eteched into the stand.

I am going to start an interest thread in the Junkyard so I can get a better estimate on the price.

Thanks for looking

Okay Everyone,

Here is the Prototype.

The shop didn't widen the cradles enough so I had to do that myself, and I am unsure why there is a center hole, but both those problems can be remedied in the second prototype.

I like the black base, so I am going to have the seals done in silver/chrome if possible.

I wanted to get opinions at this stage before I get a final prototype made.

Well enough talk here is the pic.

Ok opinion time!

---------------------Original Post----------------------------

I have wanted for while to have stands made for my Sonics. I finally broke down and started the mockup.

I want to get some opinions, please keep in mind the white "plate" would not be on the final product, it was just the MR Mini arms were a bit long.

After looking I think the arms need to be taller.

The Seal of Rassilon would be on a mirror base on the finished product.

I will be having cradles made that would hold the 9th/10th Style Sonic also.

Once I get the prototype made, and if there is an interest, I may do a run.

Please critique the heck out of it, as I want to work out as many kinks as possible before, I build the prototype.

Thanks.

I like it. It'd look good on a desk. For the 9th/10th sonic, are you going to use the same basic design? Maybe use this for that one instead of the SoR?

CCP,

Do you have a high-res version of that design. In answer to your question, yes I will use the same basic design for the 9th/10th Sonics

Sorry, no. I found that just doing a quick image search on google for the purposes of putting it in this thread. There's one on the BBC website that's even textured and aged that looks really cool. I dunno if it's high res or not tho

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

Looks like a nice 'tidy' stand for the screwdrivers - I'll watch this post with interest as I'm likely ot interested in some if you do a run!

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

I think it looks very nice. How sturdy is the sonic on it? Does the Sonic easily fall off of it?

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

Quick Update:

I am hoping to have the prototype in my hands next week. It won't have the seal on it, since I am trying to decide the best way to do that. Once that is done I will have one made with the seal.

Mobius, the Sonic is very sturdy and doesn't fall off.

If the finished one looks good then I will see if a run would be in order.

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

Very cool! I would definitely be interested in on for my 10th sonic (maybe the design on the cover of the pocket watch for the base?). Any estimates on cost if there is a run?

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

I like the design which was in CCP's post (looked like the design on the
back of the chameleon arch watch) rather than the Seal of Rassilon.

If that were the engraving on the base, I certainly would be interested
in one.

(I have a MFX Sonic).

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

Well here is the plan.

Step One: The Mockup (Done)
Step Two: Prototype Mark I (No Design on Base) -- This is to make sure that the correct look is there.
Step Three: Prototype Mark II (Seal on the Base) -- This is to finallize what the finished product would look like.
Possible Step Four: Interest Thread and Pricing

I am planning on two basic designs. The Seal of Rassilon for the Classic Sonic Design and the Modern "Seal" (as seen above) for the 9th/10th Sonic Design.

The "Design" Phase will take longer, because if this becomes a run, I want to make sure it is done right.

Like I said before. This is not a "interest" thread. This is a design thread. I have no idea on the pricing or time frames or anything.

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

Some one PM'd me the question so I figure I ought to answer it here for all.

I am considering having cradles made to hold the Character Options Classic and 9th/10th Sonic. I know several members have those versions.

As for the 11th Doctor's Sonic....I am not sure on that one yet....but there may be a chance for that one also.

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

If it's still of interest to you, I've got the image in post 2 at about 600 x 600 pixels, which is twice the size as what's pictured there. That may seem small, but it prints up nicely, so you can have it if you want. I also used it in my avatar.

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

Small update.

The group making the prototype called me and is hoping to have the stand ready on Wednesday. If it is ready early enough I will pick it up on Wednesday and get pics posted that night.

Still working on the best way of getting the design on without looking cheesy.

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

Looks pretty cool for single displays. Have you also considered double, triple and spiral stack mounting for displaying more than one prop at a time? Some of us have an entire warehouse full of them to show off, you know. ;)

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

Why yes, I have considered a Wazoovian version of the stand. It stands 60 feet tall and can hold all but 3 of your sonics......

Seriously, I have an idea for a multi-sonic stand, but since this is my first attempt at some stands I wanted to start small. But the multi-sonic (classic version) stand mockup is in the works. Plan is right now to have the same Seal of Rassilon, but it will be larger and it will hold 3 Sonics (ala the Pertwee, Baker, Davidson) or 4 Sonics (ala the Pertwee, Baker, Davidson, and McGann).

As for something bigger than that? Well.........could be.........

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

What you could also do is make a Seal of Rassilon stand with mount holes drilled at clock points (1 thru 12) and have the mounts sold in pairs at various heights. This way a person could show off one sonic (a pair of mounts at 3 and 9 o'clock), two sonics (mounts at 3 & 9 and 12 & 6 or 2 & 8 and 4 & 10), three sonics (mounts every other hour on the clock face), etc., up to six sonics per stand.

This would mean you'd have to have mounts made in 6 different heights but it would mean one base and many uses as well as a cool rotated sonic display.

Just an update, called the company who is building this to find out I got bumped by a larger order. Hopefully I get the stand next week.

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

I love the look. Now I have to find room on my desk.

Re: Mockup Sonic Screwdriver Stand -- Need Opinions

Actaully, I just had an additional idea: instead of making the mounts in various heights just make them in two parts: the riser and the cradle. The riser could have more risers attached to it to increase the height before the cradle would be put on it. Less parts to manufacture and still creates the functionality I described above.
