Props we thought we knew...

I was just thinking today about how convinced a lot of us used to be that certain props were made from certain items.

Remember these ol' myths of yore.

•Imperial commander's rank cylinders are chalk holders.
•Boba's shin tool has two x-acto handles
•Saber grips are military windshield wipers blades
•OWK's saber has a motorcycle hand grip & a sink drain emitter
•IG88's head is a garbage disposal
•round metal disk on Snowtroopers (and elsewhere) are from hearing aid battery packages.

What other discoveries have blown old "realities" out of the water?

OWK ANH lower grip as a 'gear', the pommel as a faucet knob--oh wait, that was true :p

There's a lesson in this, in all the enthusiasm which often greets new theories. As a class, and with enough exceptions to keep the hobby moving forward, prop fans are a foggy-minded lot. ;)

it was long believed that one of the motion tracker pieces was a fuelpump or windshieldwiper pump. it turned out to be a pressuregauge.

IG-88's head was also called a coffee percolator. Now I know he's actually this big hunk of metal in my garage!

I remember the lawnmower gear theory.

I also remember looking at fire sprinklers for the Obi Wan emitter. Bicycle wheel hubs, too.

I actually bought a couple lawnmower gears and some similar looking (but too small) camera flashes, back in the day. Of course I didn't know they were wrong until they arrived.

I bet the Obi Wan emitter had the most false leads. I remember when someone saw an old commercial that had a clip of welders in it and everyone was sure it was some sort of torch tip.

I think there is an archived thread where people were insisting the Solo ANH blaster flash hider was still a fire extinguisher right up until the actual part was found.

That was because the one person that supposedly had one lied and said it was. He had a pic and a whole made up story. bizarre.

A few years ago, while building a Ghostbusters proton pack, the rumor went around that the main body of the pack was from the bottom motor and transmission cover from a golf cart. It was said that this piece was cut out, attached to a back plate and a bunch of doodads, wires and other greebley bits were added to make the pack! For the longest time, no one wanted to accept the simple fact that the pack was a designed, built from scratch and molded in fiberglass piece.
