Proper height for Superman?

I'm 5'10''. Someday I'd like to cosplay as Superman. I know that everyone should be able to and feel comfortable cosplaying as whomever they want, (within reason, nothing racist obviously) I agree with that sentiment and I like seeing people comfortable coslplaying as characters they don't really look like. However, I can't shake the self concious feeling that I'm not tall enough. I can certainly wear some lifts and boots with a generous heel and bump myself up a bit, but I'm afraid I still won't look convincing enough. Any tips or advice? Do you think as a dark haired individual that is working on getting bigger/more muscular, but is average height, I could pull it off?

I once saw a guy at a con who looked a lot like Superman, except he looked to be 5'7''. I really liked his costume and thought he looked really cool. Even though his height was really minor to me when I saw him, I still have the irrational feeling I'll be judged if I'm not the proper size.

I don't know if this thread would do better in the DC forum, but I didn't want to post a thread that wasn't related to a project in there, and this forum is more discussion oriented, so I posted here.

I honestly don't think anyone will care if you're not 6'3". Just have fun with it!

This is only my personal opinion and you should feel free to do what you like:

I do judge costumes on their ability to make me temporarily believe that the character has come off the pages. This includes height, race, and even eye color if it's iconic enough. So for me, seeing someone who is a great fit for a character makes all the difference between "I wonder how they put in the zipper" and "That's Superman!" I think 5'10" is a bit too short for Superman. It's at the lower end for Batman, maybe, since the ears give some extra height.

However, it's still a blast to dress up as your favorite characters. My height at 6'3"+ didn't stop me from going to SDCC as Spider-Man and I had a great time and got many positive comments. So yes, it does factor in but you'll enjoy yourself regardless.

Again, this is only an opinion and I think everyone should dress up as whomever they like.

I say go for it. What will stick out more is a lack of proportion, not a lack of height. Unless you were like 5'4". That would look weird. :lol

Being only 5'7" on my best days (I slouch sometimes), I had gone to a convention as Doc Savage, who would be considerably taller than I am. I still had fun with the character, as you should as Superman at your height.

Let's not forget, Henry Cavill is 6'1". Not THAT much taller than yourself. Dean Cain is 6'. Christopher Reeve (6'4") and Brandon Routh (6'3") were the exception.

You're fine, with some boots or lifts you'll be around 6' and that's taller than most people. It's also how you walk, if you're self conscience about it you're likely to slouch and tilt your head down. Pull your shoulders back, stick out your chest and hold your head up high. If you present yourself like Superman would that's all you need.

Definitely go for it, because 5'10 isn't short. But, like the above comment says, wear lifts in your boots and you'll be about 6 feet tall if not taller, and that's a good height for Superman. I'm going to wear lifts with my Batman suit because I'm 6 feet tall and I'd like to be about 6'2-6'3, and I use lifts with my Vader suit, and they get me up to about 6'5 with my helmet on.

Personally this is always what has held me back from cosplaying as Supes. I've loved the character dearly since I was a kid and would love to put a build together for him. However, at 5'5" I've always felt I'd be judged and made fun of. It's kind of disheartening.

Cosplay whoever you feel. Despite size and height. I personally, prefer cosplaying those with a similar build to me, as I really like feeling like the character, not just feeling like someone dressed as a character. I didn't feel like I WAS Batman because I felt too small. 5'10 170lbs. But that's just me. DO it if you want to.

Also, take advantage of that height and do shorter cosplayers if you like the characters. You are perfect height for Wolverine for example.

You should totally go for it. It doesnt matter if you are tall enough, its more if you have the actitud of representing him. Yeah he is awesome tall and super built. But if you feel like him no matter what you think ppl would said go for it. Its all about having fun and geek around. Dont mind the looks I have seen great cosplayers not looking the part but they did a great job cuz they feel the character.

You can cosplay whoever you want to, regardless of height. Nobody is going to care.

Personally, at 5'7 I'm cosplaying Batman and his size is part of what makes him so intimidating. I got myself a pair of elevator that look exactly like the boots the version of Batman I'm portraying wears that boost me up to 6'0. I feel much more like the character now.

Who cares , it's all about having fun and escaping from normal life for a short period of time , we are not super heroes so have fun with it ... I dress as any character I want , don't care if they are 6+ of 5 foot , it's all about the fun :)

Have fun bro

Alex
