First off, Devil's Advocates
never ask for forgiveness.
Surely, even the Devil has manners!!
You raise a good point. If a reseller presents it without a COA confirming the source of this prop is an original production prop, and says, "provenance unknown," or words to that effect, is it misleading?
Yep, that's what I was getting at.
IMO, pretty much anything we make without licence from the copyright holders is a forgery (however good or bad it may be).
I'd think it'd only be a real problem if we were selling the replica, especially for profit.
But my concern was over people not in the 'Prop Scene', who might not know that genuine props usually come with certification. It may be the fringe, but a lot of fans will buy what they think is authentic stuff from the one particular show or movie they're into, on the basis of being sold by a 'Prop-Seller'.
Case in point - Sons Of Anarchy. Fox will not licence the Patches used on the show, yet people are unwittingly buying 'authentic' copies off eBay and such for large amounts of money. Not only are they being cheated, but they are getting hassle from real 1% bikers.
It's an extreme example, but in this case possessing unlicenced memorabillia can actually get you seriously hurt.
