Did you, by any chance, build a mock up of the head of a stake and pound on it with the mallet? Because that would really set the "used" look in.

Do you plan to age the metal to match?

It's brass, so I'll let it age naturally, I didn't seal it. I haven't found a way to rush the process and still look natural and realistic.

Thanks guys, yeah I'm still working on it. Haven't had much time though. There's a TON of things I want to change before I share the whole costume, I wasn't happy with the way it came out for Con. But hopefully I'll get back on track with this project soon!

This costume is still a WIP as I find time to add to it. Here's the current version that I wore this year to SD Comic-Con

There's still a LOT of details I want to change and add... it's an ever changing costume. I want to build a back/shoulder rig for a larger stake and under arm raygun holster. Add the brass plates to the neck guard, complete handmade eye glass frames, some arm bracers, a belt pouch/shoulder bag.

Wow, man. This kind of detail work is why I had never tackled a steampunk anything until the Portal build (and that's nowhere near this impressive - I wish you had done my leather work!).

The only thing I would say against it is that the mallet seems so small! I'd think a vampire hunter would want a BIG mammajamma to drive those stakes home through breastbone!

:lol yeah I know, but go look for a wooden mallet in a larger size... I ended up cutting a wood rolling pin down and drilling and mounting the handle to make that one! All the one's I found had too modern of handles or plastic/rubber heads. And the stakes I currently have are perfect size for that mallet. And I didn't want to walk around with a big heavy mallet all day,lol

Yup, I wanted the darker grey one, but were out of stock in my size. I'll eventually order it. We had to resew one button on, but very well made for the price!
