Hi guys,

I want to show you our last work! We would to improve our Book of Secrets cover to give the opportunity to all people that take our BoS in the original run to take this one and improve its quality.

We studied the original one so much... we made a new seal, 100% accurate. We choose a new leather and we NOT use cardboard inside, so it will be flexible just like the original!

This is just a WIP pic (not yet buttons installed) but it can be good to understand new quality! ;)

Let me know if you like it!

I have mixed emotions about this as I thought I had the ultimate BOS. Of course nothing is perfect and improvement is always possible but I am a little conflicted to be honest.

On the flip side you could offer them filled with blank pages of the original paper and people could make their own BOS.

Still not sure if I am going to be able to keep my N.T. Collection but if I do I suppose I will need to upgrade.

Should get my BoS out of the cupboard, color of the leather seems more or less the same as the old cover? I might be interested if price is not too high...

Only thing I'm a bit afraid of, is not being able to remove the book itself out of the old cover without tearing the cardboard pieces that keep it inside. If I remember correctly, the book fits relatively tight into the current cover...

Price is Still unknown, I'll let you know as soon as possible.
Regarding remove bos from old cover is really easy, open cover to 360 degrees and flip it out :)

That's the tricky part, bending it that far might tear the cardboard flaps of the book. I intended to do that when I wanted to treat the cover with a clear leather wax to protect it / keep the leather in shape, but when I tried to do that, I noticed that there would be too much tension on the book, risking it to tear it, so I decided to keep the book in and treated the cover with the book still inside (protecting the book itself by wrapping it up in a cloth, before waxing the cover.

Hey Tom, what leather treatment did you use and how did it turn out?

Thanks

Tom

I used a clear, what's called in dutch "schoensmeer". I guess it's best stranslated as shoe polish / shoe wax / shoe grease. Be very sure it's a CLEAR one, without any pigment in it.

I just used a cloth with a bit of this product to wipe the complete cover. I tried it on the inside first, to be sure it didn't affect the colouring, but it didn't. I mainly did this to protect the leather / keep it in good shape. It doesn't affect the appearance at all, but it will prevent the leather from drying out / cracking / etc... I repeat this process when the leather starts to feel a bit dry again, but this is not more than once a year or even once every two years. If you apply it too much, the leather will become saturated with the grease and you don't want that to happen either.

Normally, if you handle the book very much, the grease on your hands is enough to keep the leather in good shape, but I don't think most people take their BoS in their hands on a daily basis, so I advice to keep an eye on the leather from time to time and if you see that it starts feeling a bit "dry", you use the same treatment as I did with mine...

@Pasquale... very nice cover indeed.... especialy the seal looks very, very crisp in above pic.
Perfect :thumbsup

As for the replacement cover, i will stick with the one made by myself. As it is made by me, I do have a special relation with it ;)

Tom... if the leather treatment is "simply a kind of grease" I am pretty sure you can bent the cover forward and backword for this
one "of a kind" replacing the cover. Other than that, I don't think you need to have the cover bent back the full "swing". I am not aware
what kind of material Pasquale used to fit the book block into the cover, but it should be flexible enough.
As long as you just bent the cover and not "fold" it, it should be ok.

It's not the old cover I'm afraid of damaging, but the book inside. I'm sure the leather of the old and new cover is flexible enough, but the carboard front and back cover of the book inside have to be bend almost 360 degrees, like Sarednab said. Have you ever tried to do that with a book? Not many survive that kind of treatment... Anyway. It doesn't matter that much. Let's see how these new covers turn out and what their price will be...

If you included a plain notebook for those that don't really need the contents for the time being, what would the price be?
