prepping leather pouches for dying

I purchased some pouches off e-bay to use with my tk armor and I need to dye them. I've ordered the USMC dye from Tandy, but the pouches are moderately dirty. I have saddle soap that I use on my mocs, will that work? If I clean them tonight will they be dry enough to dye tomorrow or will the saddle soap interfere with the dye soaking in in the first place?

Thanks.

I just dyed a few pouches and did nothing other than dust them off and with a damp cloth. They took the dye just fine. I followed that up with black shoe polish and buffed them with a soft towel. Easy.

FYI - be sure to wear some latex gloves when you use the dye - that stuff will dye everything, including your hands. :eek

I dyed some shoes and pouches black once and just wiped them down with a little rubbing alcohol first. Worked great.

And be careful.. I was just reading a post on the Armor Archive by a guy who spilled some black leather dye in his lap . . . you can probably guess the result. :eek

Use some Fiebings Deglazer to remove any dye, wax or old polish.

Ditto on the Fiebings products. I've dyed all my gun belts, ammo pouches and reconditioned a couple of old MP40 mag. pouches using their products....good stuff :thumbsup

Thanks everyone for the responces. I went ahead and used the saddle soap Thurs. night bacause I thought my dye would be showing up Friday. As it is, they've had plenty of time to dry, since my dye still hasn't arrived. I finished my armor around 4 o'clock this morning and plan to go out in it tonight, but I intended to wear the pouches tonight as well. I was told that the clear coat can go on 20 minutes after the dye has been applied. If UPS brings me my package in the next hour or so, will I have time to dye them and safely wear them against my armor tonight, or should I just wear butterscotch color pouches tonight and try do dye them for Halloween?

P.S. - I hpoe I don't need deglazer because I didn't order any...

i dyed 3 pouches recently for my TD. i didn't clean any of them... just slapped the dye right on over the dirt. i figured that i wanted them to look old and beaten up, not clean and new, so that would only help my cause. they took the dye perfectly.

i used the fiebings usmc black as well. the deglazer is (imo) really only needed if you are trying to dye something that has been sealed with a finish of some sort. most of the mp40 type pouches you find haven't had that.
