PREDATOR 2.0

Thats looking superb....good luck with the moulding....but if your last mould is anything to go by..you wont need it....luck that is.

The detail is amazing. What do you use to make the texture on the forehead?

Well its little rolls of clay that get squished onto the head and smoothed down with my rubber pokey tool and then smoothed with alcohol. I would be more than happy to demonstrate in a tutorial how i make the different textures, if anyone is interested? Just gotta get this finished first...

Oh and thank you all for leaving your comments and thoughts! i realy appreciate it.

The molds for this puppy will begin tommarow so i have been prepairing. I added a little more of a bulge to the eyebrows, and worked the jaw. In order to make the molds i had to cut off the mandables with a very sharp razor, and they will be cast seperate. All the teeth will also be cast separatly as well but i left them in to show the inside of the mouth a little beter. It was kinda hard to see what was going on in there before with the mandables on. So many tiny molds. :p

ok one last thing i fixed the chin and the lower teeth to be a bit more rounded and organic looking. Looked a bit flat before.

Well its time to make a mold of this head! I am going to post the process pictures here to help out any new hunters out there. The first step is to lay the head back onto a towel with a garbage bag on it to prevent fuzzies from sticking into the clay. Then i used old wooden blocks to rough out the shape of the edge. And those black lines were me trying to find out the highest point to devide the mold from, its just felt marker. had to draw a few to find the mystical spot.

Next i added the laguna wed clay. Its just a water based clay and its used to make the form to divide this into a two pice mold. You can see the keys added around the edge to lock the two pices together when its finished.

Next the spash coat of ultra cal 30. There is no burlap mixed in yet, this is just to pick up the texture. Had some minor problems at this step, its about 95 degrees outside and the ultracal set up in about 3 min. All seems well tho added another coat over that to thicken it up.

K, using burlap dunked into the ultracal, i thickened it up and got a kinda flat spot on the face to keep it from wobbeling as your working with it. My rubber kidney i normaly use to smooth it seems to have gone missing so it was smoothed with a pice of cardboard. (gotta work with what ya got)

And the last step on this side is to flip it over and clean it up. All extra wed clay thats stuck on there can be removed with a soft chip brush and some water. It needs to be perfectaly clean or there will be a lump on the edge were the clay got stuck in there when you make a final latex pull.

Well, now for a little clean up for any damage on the back of the head from laying it back, and then to making the back side. There will need to be a little rasping of the edges that overflowed the clay form, but that will have to wait untill both sides are done. I will post the rest as it gets completed, thanks for looking! Any questions on the process or comments feel free to speak up.

You cant count me in on that one, Termokk... I always enjoy watching this kind of stuff!
As for your sculpt, it turned out great. I love the skin-detail on the frontside of his throat, can´t remember having ever seen something like this.

Well the head piece is done, molds are complete. I will show the final stages to finishing the back of the head and the second piece. First off needed to build up a matching wall out wed clay to act as a guide for the mold thickness and make a place to put clamps onto the mold. Little pices of clay are stuck near the edges at this point to make a void in the ultracal to create pry points. Then the whole head is covered in crystal clear and the ultracal is covered in vasaline to act as a separator and keep it from sticking together.

Next a splash coat is applied of ultracal-30 followed by about 5 layers of burlap soaked in ultracal. The burlap makes the mold slightly lighter but mainly it will prevent the mold from breaking if it cracks.

And thats it! The fun part was trying to get it apart this mourning. The face had some little air bubbles in it from the ultracal setting up to fast in the face but that is easly remidied by putting drops of ultracal into the holes and as it starts to set up wipe the excess off. I got this mold out in the sun now with the first pull of latex drying in it. Gotta mold the teeth and the mandables now...

excellent work cant wait to see it when its done ....
every day i learn more and more from you guys on the lair.....
im glad that you guys have the huntorials and give us new members a chance to learn new things..
thanks o_O

Now into the mandable and teeth molds! I am going to be casting them in the same latex as the head. In the first picture you can see all the teeth and the upper mandables half buried in wed clay, complete with keys and little overflow lines to let excess latex squish out when the molds are put together. Got a coat of crystal clear as usual. The walls were made out of some scrap plastic sheets i had.

Then a splash coat is applied of ultracal-30, then i half fill the mold and float a piece of burlap then fill it the rest of the way.

And thats it for that side, pretty much the same deal on the other side. Just coat it with vasaline were ultracal will touch ultracal and throw in some pry points. Hopefully i will be able to cast some up tommarow, and see how they look. I coated the head mold with 2 painted on layers of latex followed by a very heavy fill and pour layer. Its been drying since yesterday and its not done yet, im trying to make these thick so they can take a beating. They have roughly half a gallon of latex in each head or about 4 lbs. Will post more updates as they are completed.
