Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request. (FINISHED!)

Yeah, yeah, I know "More wands?". :lol But my daughters (9 & 13) decided that they wanted some wands for Xmas, so how could I not. My youngest wanted a Hermione, and my oldest a Cho Chang. (Who picks Cho Chang???)

So, being the junk whittler I am, I grabbed a few reference pics and a 1/2" pine dowel, and came up with these.

(One more coat of clear coming, these things are going to get ABUSED!)

There's one or two spots on the Cho that I'm not too proud of, but I think they turned out well over all.

Now for the request for suggestions.

Between the two of them I spent a grand total of $1.40, so I can't bring myself to pay $10 plus shipping for some wand boxes. As such, I picked up some supplies, and drew up a plan for my own "Olivander's Box"

The abomination I've built is not worthy of sharing pics...it's really that bad. Though it functioned as a decent stand for taking the wand pics.

Does anyone have another presentation idea besides the Olivander style box? I really don't want to wrap a stick for Xmas, but I can't really come up with anything else for these.

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

You could make some mini-Hogwarts luggage bags, with the name of the character that the wand belongs to on a card attached to the handle, or their initials on the box it's self. Kind of like a mystery box, with some other paper props inside. Btw great job on the wands!

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

Not a bad idea. I may give that a go tomorrow and see how it comes out. I've also been reassessing my Olivander box, I think the biggest issue with it is that I just plain over-built, so I may try again with a simpler approach.

Thank you. The Cho is very slender, and "whippy". You just HAVE to give it a "Swish & Flick" when you pick it up. I'm very proud of the vine work on the Hermione, though I seem to have picked the worst pics in that it looks like there's no taper to it. This is probably a direct result of my crappy photography skills. :lol

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

yes, simplifying and decorating it right will help. Good luck with you next try, and no problem they REALLY look great even if the pictures aren't professional photographer quality. :p i hope your daughters love the wands (i'm sure they will :) )

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

Wow nice vine work, I 'm not that patient, maybe have to try one in the future though.

Check out pics on this thread of the wand boxes I make from scratch, got everything from JoAnn Fabrics store with some coupons you can get some things pretty cheap. It just takes time to assembly the whole thing.

For a quick presentation I just take a piece of kraft paper or paper bag, crinkle it up then flatten it again. Then wrap it up and tie with some white string like they do in the movies. Oh also put a small gift tag on it.
Check out my wands here at the rpf or on Flickr: JLWandmaker's Photostream
Hope that helps.

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

Thanks HeirofOllivander, that's a real compliment coming from you. Love your boxes BTW.

I gave it another go, and came up with a passable box. Still not very happy with them though, more so because just as I "finished" them, I noticed the two lengths of gauzy ribbon sitting on the other bench...D'OH! Oh well, no ribbon on these boxes I guess.

I'll put some pics up tomorrow.

I like the brown paper idea, and I may just use it for the order of three wands I just got. Unfortunately, they want a Hermione too. Ugh! I've got to get into casting. I hate re-sculpting. lol

Hey, my mom did that to me last year (though the stick was attached to a gift card for a new hockey stick)

I would check out Michaels, or some other craft store and first find a box thats the right size, then just look around at different stuff to cover it. You can get fabric, but also check out the scrapbooking section, there is usually some pretty cool paper that you could possible use to cover a cardboard box (faux wood/leather?)

Now that's kinda cool.

Yeah, a Michael's trip to make a box for a $0.70 wand just doesn't make sense to me. Like I said though, I did come up with a couple decent boxes though. I'll post 'em tomorrow.

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

Hmmm...OK...apparently "tomorrow" is a term I use rather loosely. :rolleyes

So these turned out "OK", but I don't think I'll be making anymore of them. I really miss the ribbon. Guess that's what I get for not paying attention.

And for anyone interested, here's the Ollivanders logo I put together for these. It looks great printed on parchment. Just don't make the same mistake as I did and oven age it afterword. It doesn't need it. :unsure

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

I would make a suggestion, but as you can see in this thread...
http://www.therpf.com/f9/my-mothers-custom-wand-christmas-102502/

I tend to get a bit carried away... lol

What about doing something similar only more like a wall hanging plaque, perhaps even with a photo shopped picture of your kids in hogwarts robes dueling, with the two wands mounted on the front to be removable....just a thought, like I said I tend to get carried away...lol

Something like this picture...

With their wands mounted where they are in the photo...if that makes any sense

No, that's not getting carried away. That's putting your heart into your art. You presentation, and your original wand for that matter, are very impressive. I may have to update these with something like you've suggested in the future, because I REALLY like that idea, but for now my financial & physical limitations prevent it.

You see, I'm out of work due to a broken collar bone on the right side, so no mulah, and no dominant arm. Every thing I've posted on this site has been the result of using my right hand as a tool clamp and moving the material against the tools. I call it reverse whittling, and I'm sure it's pretty comical to watch.

Please note: I've been broken for nearly 6 months, and at this point I just get uncomfortable when people show concern over it, as I've gotten pretty used to it by now. Just get yourself a chuckle out of the mental image I provided. ;)

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

I understand the financial hardship, I've been unemployed for almost a year now. That was how I ended up making wands for gifts this year myself. I also know what it is like to deal with sore shoulders, I have had two torn rotator cuffs for over 7 years now...not quite bad enough for surgery but they get very sore very easily, I commend you for finding ways to do what is really important.

As another thought....I am thinking of doing this with some of the other wands I am giving as gifts this year since making the boxes is kind of a pain....lol

I am thinking of using the cardboard tubes from wrapping paper and putting some decorative paper around them because they are easier to cover than a box... and then just making a cap at one end that is permanent and one that opens at the other end and then putting a sort of slide inside that holds the foam and wand...much easier to cover, just as cheap and a whole lot easier...if I can get one made today I'll post pics to hopefully explain it a bit better.

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

Now THAT is an idea! I have 3 more wands to make. A Harry, a Ron, and *uggh* another Hermione, and I am not trying to make any more boxes. They are harder to produce than the wands themselves. lol

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

I had wands to make for 6 kids this year...and the total amount of time it took me to make all 6 wands was less than it took me to make one box. Lucky for me only one had to be even remotely screen accurate...and even that one isn't completely because I used foam core board for the box because I knew it had to be sturdy to put up with the abuse of being played with...I'll post pics when I can get some taken...

Re: Potter Wands & Display Suggestion Request.

Almost forgot to share these.

I finished my wand project Wednesday.

For these three, instead of wrestling with making boxes, I put my Ollivanders logo on some parchment tags, and printed the wand "materials" inside the tags.

I like the results so much more than the boxes, that I wish I had done it with the other two as well. But I made the boxes, so they are STAYING in boxes. :lol

Here are all 5 of my wands displayed together.
L-R: Cho Cang, Hermione Granger, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley.

And a close up of the handle details.

Organic Mechanic's Wand Emporium is now OUT OF BUSINESS. At least until such time as I have a lathe for doing the hard part with.

Those look really great! I'm envious of your ability... I'll have to get some pics taken when the kids open their wands since I sort of forgot to before I wrapped them...lol

Alas, I have no FB account. I'm sure it's amazing though.

you did a Hermione??? :confused
outstanding work:thumbsup

Thank you. I love the wand, it's my favorite of the bunch, but I HATED making it.
