PotC: The Black Pearl

I'm thinking my "museum" cubicle at work could use a pirate ship in the corner. I know some folks do some awesome wood scale models of the old tall ships -- I don't suppose anyone ever made the Black Pearl? Or at least found the proportions of her hull?

I hope?

That's a good idea. After seeing Dead Man's Chest, I thought about making the Flying Dutchman, but I hadn't gotten into models yet. I'd love to see someone make the Black pearl, though.

You know, that's a really good idea. I've seen the sailing ship kits at hobby shops when I stop in for supplies, and I've thought about picking one up. It would be a nice change of pace from styrene and resin. I wonder if there is an existing kit that could be kit bashed to make The Black Pearl. This is worthy of further investigation.

actually, it was plans I was casting about for... has anyone made a 3D model perhaps?

I've seen a couple wood kits that look close.. but they're all super-detailed and 300-400 plus. I'm thinking scratch built and not um... quite so spendy. :)

This isn't terribly informative, but it's an interesting little read. At the very least it looks like we are looking for a three mast, square-rigged, galleon as a base to build on. That's more than I new before finding it since I've never done much reading on sailing ships before this.

Is there a missing link here...? What isn't terribly informative?

I'm guessing he means this site:

What kind of ship is the Black Pearl?

I've seen another model a little closer to the Pearl than the Courroune.. I'll have to dig a bit to find it again though.

AW Studios (me) is working on a kit of here for release early next year, with a Flying Duchman coming after. I'm waiting for the DVD for those shots of here beached.

Here's an early test with a Lindberg kit:

You can see that it has the basic shap of the hull, and the appropriate deco, but has three rows of cannons, so the other hull needs skinned and redriled. This was moslty a paint test to see how she'd look.

Stay tuned.

Nice..

Will your kit be wood or plastic?

Yeah, I noticed the extra deck. Buther...
oh. I just found a NICE photo of the figurehead from disneyland the other day -- do you have that one?

Wow, I've wanted to see a model of the Pearl for quite a while now.

When I was watching some TV spots for POTC2 I happened to see that there was a segment of what looked like a time lapse montage of the "new" mobile Pearl being constructed in a yard.

Anyone got ?

Or are we gonna have to wait fer the dvd and pray that the extras arent the usual "we got some guys to make one, I think it was wood or something. Heavy, Boaty....."

Got some good pics on this site - Building the Black Pearl

What the hell does it say on the stern?

The large text is almost certainly SUNSET. Only the last letter is questionable. However, the second, smaller line of text is unreadable. Perhaps I can make some of it out when I get home and can look at it in Photoshop.

The top line says "SUNSET". The original Black Pearl was built on a barge. Gore Verbinski wanted a Black Pearl that could move faster than one or two knots for the sequel, so they built a new Black Pearl around an existing 109-foot-long boat called the Sunset, which was a ship that once serviced oil derrecks in the Gulf of Mexico.

And I don't know for sure, but I suspect the second line of text would be a notation of where she makes berth.

I've been following this thread just on general interest, but while looking at sailing ships for another project I came accross a model kit that has features very similar to the Black Pearl - general hull shape, etc. It can be seen in this thread at Fine Scale's forum: http://www.finescale.com/FSM/CS/forums/630033/ShowPost.aspx

It's the Heller 1/200 Spanish Galleon kit. It needs some work as far as the cabin detail at the stern and the detail at the bowsprit, and the number of gun ports and their locations, but I think this is where I'd start if I were building the Pearl (perhaps I will.)

Here's another great site for reference pics of the Pearl and the Dutchman: http://www.the-bahama-islands.com/piratesofcaribbean.html
