Just seeing if anyone has sourced some good buttons? I still am not happy with mine. It looks like that topnotchcostumes had some but they don't offer them anymore.

Anyone have any leads? I'd perfer to get all 47, but if only a couple are available... there is some casting that can be done!

Scott at YorDreem Costuems on ArrBay or www.yordreem.com sells handmade resin buttons at $3.00 each.

I ordered mine from that German website awhile back. They are 7/8 inches wide and already tarnished metal brass color. They don't have the little lip on them and they were not cheap. My YorDreem coat sans buttons should be arriving soon at which time I need to start sewing on 47 buttons....

I have been checking ArrBay but most of the time they come up perfect looking but are far too small.

Yeah those german ones look close. I just wish they had a lip. I have the JP ones on there already, but they are too shallow. Might have to make my own... Arrrrgg...

I have been looking at the general cost of making resin based buttons plus painting and it is not too expensive. Michael's hoppy store has clear resin for about $20.00 and catalyst for about $8.00. Enought to make about 100 buttons.

The key to this now is making the mold. Not just one mold but about 10 in one mold so you are not having to make one button at a time.

Hey Cs,

Can I see a photo of the underside of the JAS Townsend buttons? the edge looks right to me they just need more of a dome right? can they be dished out more??

Here is a link to their website with pics of the buttons.

I don't think manipulating them is a good idea because the dome is pretty shallow and reworking the button may cause the shank to break off or really mess up the surface. It will also make the diameter of the button muc smaller as you start bending down the edges.

Not saying don't try but just what may happen.:rolleyes

MV-Creations is new to the forum. I saw this post, I know its old but figured why not pass on the pirate info. I had searched and searched for the buttons even in NYC but nothing. We even called up the original supplier to the potc films but everything was gone and not reorderable. So what to do but make em' myself. Let's here from you and tell me what you think.

The CJS frock coat buttons are still by far the most difficult to find unless you get them from Jas & Townsend and even those are not SA.

You would need to get the dimensions and cast them yourself out of pewter or resin. I recommend using resin because it would be much lighter.

I am in the process of making molds for these buttons using wood and plan on casting them in polymer clay. Easiest method that I know how. Unfortunately I need to make 50!!! 47 for the frock coat and 3 spares!

I actually purchased a set from JasTownsend. Their great buttons but lack the proper depth. The photos on the site are taken from above and look as though their more domed. Waterbury Button Co. has military buttons: http://www.waterburybutton.com/user-cgi/patterns.cgi?catg=Military but they all have raised logos of military service on them, no plain ones. I called but no deal. They use original antique moldes for most of their lines. I've manufactured the whole set via prototype, moldes etc.as CapnJackSavvy has mentioned. Sorry for the small pix. Not so savvy on loading larger ones up yet. But we have better ones on our website. Each set takes about 3hrs from start to finish. The aging detail taking the most time. If you go to the site scroll down to the REPLICA PROPS SECTION that will leed you to more hi-res pix. Don't mind the other site my wife and I while having regular careers also are raging entrepreneurs. The Pirate life though is a labour of love. All pirates all the time. Some of our friends think were a slight bit nutty but we love it. Any questions or tips needed feel free to e-mail- business@mv-creations.com Robert www.mv-creations.com

I originally cast them in plastic (SMOOTH-ON product) but the release agent makes the painting process almost impossible (a problem that the manufacturer actually mentions) If you don't use the release agent it limits the life of the mold. So I moved on to a stone like material (like ultra-cal) that casts very well keeps detail and has a weight that equals what the metal equivelant would be so they hang well on the garment. Fairly durable as well after all the paint and finish is applied it bonds the piece even more. I've wacked them on the floor and they stayed in one piece. You probably wouldn't see that kind of abuse on an average costume anyhow aside from the stray tavern fight...I read all the fourms GUIDLINES and I know there is a thing about hawking wares (i'm the new kid after all) but in fliping around the pages I see people talking about their products. So I hope it's not any big thing. I've been doing the set for $100 on arrrrr-bay and selling fairly well. It works out to about $2 a button. I'd be willing to go knock off $10 For RPF folk. Free domestic shipping. E-mail me if you want business@mv-creations.com Were trying to post photos on our site of people weve done business with and just friends. It's in the beginning stages. I'm actually slowly going to change the whole web-site to Pirate related material. anyway I'm headin' out for some carousing. If you e-mail I'll get back tomorrow.
