As mentioned in my other thread, my next project was to paint the Gorilla Soldier Bust. I really took on this aspect of the hobby because of the prices on some of these collectibles. While watching the Terminator: SCC tonight, I decided to go ahead and do the piece.
The first step was a black primer/base coat. This is pretty interesting because the piece looks pretty good by itself. It could've painted to look like marble or gold like a statue, but I chose a different route...
The next step was the base colors. These are usually the actual flat colors used for each part of the display, in this case clothes, hair, skin, etc. You will notice the blue used for the hair. This is a first layer of creating the slight blue tint found in black hair. In all of the reference photos of POTA, the hair is a different color depending on lighting...
Next is the shadowing layer of black for detail...
At this point the piece could considered done. However, I am a big fan of "finishing" a piece. So a layer of clear gloss coat is applied to the jacket and face. This separates the "pieces" a little more by adding the realism of leather and skin, seperating them from the cloth shirt and hair. Clear gloss coat can also be applied at different levels, such as 2 layers for leather, 4 layers for skin, and I added even more layers to the nostrils, lips, and eyes for a real wet look. I also dulled the hair some more with a highlight layer of brown, adding more separation between the skin and hair...
And a detail of the face...
That's all I have from the POTA for now, but I thought I would share it. Thanks for looking.
