Possible first ever? Star Wars book in Aurebesh.

Greetings all! I know I’m relatively quiet on the forum but I’ve got something to show off. First, if you want to see any of the other stuff that I’ve done recently you can head over here:

Now to the point-
Just as a fun little activity recently I have learned Aurebesh. One of the MANY versions. It really wasn’t that difficult. It’s just a matter of transposing normal English letters for a different symbol; in this case, Galactic Basic. Once you can wrap your brain around that it’s really quite natural. Even the special characters (ch, th, ae,...) make sense when you can relate them to something else.

SO, now that I have that down I took a que from Gorkon’s playbook (“You haven’t experienced Hamlet until you’ve read it in the original Klingon”) and I thought ‘What would it be like to read a book in Basic?’

Of all of Star Wars lore, my favorite book has always been I, Jedi. I figured that would be the easiest one for me to do because I’m most familiar with the story and I would have more incentive to finish the build. The hard cover is going to be packed out with Easter eggs: the binding will be in green and black, the head and tail stitching will have nine stripes of green (Rogue9), and I plan on doing two bookmarks, one silver and one purple for each phase of Corran’s lightsaber. Some other stuff too but gotta leave something to update on.

And so that got me into researching how to build a book. I’m not 100% there yet, but I have all of the pages filled into signatures and now it’s time to start sewing. Figure now it’s also time to show off where I stand. I’m gonna be posting updates when I get the cover built then the finished product. Just kind of wanted to get some feedback from some of the speeder bike handle enthusiasts. Let me know what you think. Any feedback is appreciated!

A friend reached out to Stackpole on FB to see what he’d think (I’m not on social media), so I want to throw this out as a disclaimer:
I, Jedi is an intellectual property written by someone else and the rights are not owned by me. I’m building this as a personal custom copy and do not intend to resell. No copyright infringement is intended.

That being out there now, I finished stitching the textblock.

Got the fabrics picked out and ribbons for the bookmarks. If I REALLY wanted to be accurate, the purple bookmark would be three times longer than the silver.
Nah, gotta draw the line somewhere.

Started glueing. Have to reinforce the spine some with some cheesecloth/PVA but the textblocks basically finished. Next step is getting the cover constructed.
SPOILER ALERT
Tell me what you guys think: I’ve got this medallion that I’ve held on to that imagine is Corran’s grandfathers. In the book he gives it to his wife before he does any of the Jedi training. Sort of a “hey baby I hang onto my class ring” kind of thing. I’m thinking about embedding it into the cover of the book. It symbolizes the McGuffin of the story:
A) It’s held on to by his wife that he is trying to rescue. If she hadn’t been wearing it, she wouldn’t have been abducted. It represents his quest for her.
B) As a Corellian Jedi tradition, they’re minted and given out whenever a certain rank is attained. In order to rescue her he has to learn the ways of the Force. In training and rescuing Mirax, he inadvertently earned the right to the pendant. It represents his quest for mastery of the Force.

Beta test of book cover. Not sure if I’m gonna use this or try again. Learning curve is pretty steep so I may try a 2.0.

Cover’s basically done. Inlay is setting now. Have to do the corners covers. Not sure if I’m gonna do metal or the pleather nerf-hide to match the spine. And I have something special for the inside cover.

Carbon fiber vinyl finally came in. By the way, if any of you are on the fence about buying a Cricut Maker- DO IT. ITS FRIGGIN AWESOME! This is the first official job of our joint early Christmas present. Designing back inside cover now. May do something that’s reminiscent of the back of the book: X-wings flying across Yavin 4 above the Great Temple. Front cover goes specifically to Rogue 9 though.
Once these book corner covers come in it’s done. Last thing I’ll have to do is read it.

Had what I feel is my first botched step. Miraculous that it happened so late in. You can see the paper came up when I tried to remove the positioning transfer. Sucks, but at least the vinyls on there and Drew Struzan gets his beautiful art on the rear cover.
Corner covers coming internationally so I may be sitting on this until sometime in February at the latest.
