Portal Gun finally FINISHED!

Re: Portal Gun woes - Now an actual WIP thread with pics

Update time.

June was a perfect example of my time management skills, nothing got done.

July I managed to sand down the back shell:

August is when work actually restarted properly, since the new deadline is a con at the end of August. That is next weekend, starting thursday, so 2 days left :D

I decided to "fix" the front shell's shape yet again, beefed it up here and there

But apperently I was fixing all the wrong things and in the end it's still wrong

The base bits that hold the claws are made of chunks of resin with scavanged pens:

On top of that will be more bits of pen into which the cables will be plugged in.

Onto the fun part, the wiring and lighting. Here's how extensively it was planned out:

The LEDs I used was whatever I had on hand so the amber and blue are wired slightly differently. Using that scrap clear acrylic to mount the LEDs in. In the end I decided to have an inner tube since it's the only decent way of doing it. The lights will be out the front, lighting the outer and inner clear tubes, and the top light in the back shell. A few more pics to show the wiring mess:

Testing out, everything but the inner tube

As you can see the amber LEDs I had laying around are not as bright as the super blue ones. I tried messing around with them before working out the layout but they're just too old and crappy to compete with the ultrabright stuff.

Wiring mess

Stuff getting painted!

Other stuff getting masked and painted!

Shells were first painted black on the inside, then masked and got the first coat of white primer on the outside. I ran out and it's not quite consistent, but it's decent for a first coat.

Stuff left to finish in the next 2 days:
-detail on the pen bits for cables
-the very fine detail at the base of claws
-inner tube lighting assembly
-finish painting shells
-paint endcap
-nozzle inside? (I'm debating omitting this and just leaving the LEDs uncovered, they make quite a nice flashlight actually)
-FINAL ASSEMBLY!
-FUN!

Looks like I'll finally finish my portal gun, exactly a year late :D

Re: Portal Gun almost finished!

Today after the two shells got blasted with a whole lot more white primer I started finishing up the lighting. Painted bits for assembly

LEDs back in their place, and I'm pretty sure the acrylic tube is a bit too opaque with 1500 grit sandpaper. Oh well, at least it glows nice and you can't see the inner imperfections :D

All the wires run through the center smaller tube, at cheak end passing through the center tube lighting bits

WIRE FOUNTAIN!

10 wires through tiny hole

Blue wiring completely finished at testing, can see it even with flash (forgot to turn it off)

Wiring all finish and the entire package tested! Difference in brightness between blue and amber clearer than ever.

The wiring mess. System in 3 parts: one inserted from the front, one from the back and the switch/batter/resistor board

Connector mess closeup. Not 100% as planned since I kinda winged it at times, but it all works.

Last day tomorrow :D

Re: Portal Gun almost finished!

It's a shame the amber light isn't as bright as the blue. But the entire thing is looking awesome. :D

Re: Portal Gun almost finished!

I don't think there exist amber and blue LEDs at the same voltage with the same light output - super blue is just more intense a color. I used one less blue LED than amber in my build (the steampunk styled one) and the blue was still blinding compared to the amber.

nice build TMBH! I just love this damn gun.

Re: Portal Gun almost finished!

FINISHED!

Sorry about the terrible pic but now I have to run to the first day of the con. Detailed progress of the last few bits tonight when I get back :D

This was a triumph!

I'm making a note here: huge success!

Re: Portal Gun almost finished!

Back and very tired. I really should have expected this but my arms get murdered after a while since the final gun comes out around 4.7kg.

A few pics of the finished gun after surviving first half day of a con. No proper photoshoot yet because I'm to tired and lazy to set it up and borrow my brother's camera.

First person view :D

Now the details.

The "plugs" at the base of the claws where the cables come in are bits of pens with some styrene wrapped around them for thickness at one end

The wire bits, just old crappy wire and pump needles for tubes.

The top light, just some super glue tube with other clear plastic glued in, then a marker paintjob.

As for "decals", credit goes to ThrowingChicken. Since I didn't have time to send these out to print or get my own decal paper I had to improvise a bit

Then things got silly

Couldn't cut out the much finer barcode, the bits in R, A, P were hand painted and then the whole thing got some sandpaper weathering to even out the difference between airbrushed and handbrushed stuff. I decided on 01 instead of Chell's 04 because I'm not Chell :p

Everything except the cables

Assembly

Wiring mess

"decal" weathered a bit so that it's not obvious about how crapy the mask was.

More wiring mess. I took the back shell off again because it was getting in the way of finishing up all the cable plugging

Portal gun and 75% of my other props.

Things learned from the first con day:
-Carrying this around is good exercise
-putting it down is really really awkward and you pretty much have to carry it around all the time
-claws and cable plugs are a bit fragile but they held up pretty well. The port side claw base actually broke off as soon as i got home. thankfully it was pinned as well and didn't go anywhere and was easily reglued
-EVERYONE LOVES THE PORTAL GUN

Things that will probably be done differently if I were to ever redo this:
-Try and save on weight
-stronger claws that fold away in some magical way so that it's easier to put down
-claw bases not just pinned and glues but pinned, screwed and glued
-get wires that bend easier
-brighter amber LEDs
-MORE LEDs! 58 is not enough!

Despite the various flaws, imperfections, shortcuts and laziness I'm surprisingly satisfied with my portal gun. Finally having it all assembled after a year of unpainted parts laying around was the most wonderful feeling. I wish I got to experience that more often. I have a terrible history of jumping at project and never finishing them. Hopefully this might help with laziness and distraction suppression.

It also very awesome to have something out of a video game in the real world :D
Other people's reaction were fantastic. So much fun making people's jaws drop. Also one guy asked me if I was Volpin :p

Very nice work! I've been on the fence about possibly getting a kit from a member here or going all out scratch build and then doing my own casts. I'll have to see.

Con is finally over. 4 days is definitely too long for a con, especially with a heavy prop.

Final Damage Report!

Mostly nicks and dents, some paint chipping. Majority of it on the barrel front and back of the rear shell because I really have to put the damn thing down once in a while and there's only so many ways to do that. The barrel I touched up with marker at the beginning of every day.

As mentioned earlier on Thursday the port side claw mount broke off but the pin held, so it was reglued. on Saturday the top claw mount did the same. Twice. Here's the pic of the messy on-site superglue fix.

Finally, in the last half hour of the very last day someone actually did real damage. The port side claw got broken properly.

Over the 4 days at least 70 people handled the gun (I messed up the count twice so no accurate number. The plain photo count I gave up after hitting 100 half way through saturday) and about two dozen were kids, but in the end it was a grown-up that broke it :lol
But anyway it was a friend, it was late and everyone was tired so no hard feelings.

As far as what's happening next I'll decide when I'm not tired. Could be as lazy as just the basic fixes or as major as redoing the lighting, the claws and paintjob completely. Seperately from that I need to make a stand/mount or otherwise more paint will be chipped again and again trying to store it in my room. Maybe I'll even make a case since a few ideas for a design circled in my head the past week or so.

EDIT:

Also shame on me for forgetting

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE COMMENTS! :D

I was a bit bored and decided to see just how many LED could I fit into the barrel of the gun. I quite liked the glow I get with the current setup, but it could be brighter. Maybe even bright enough to project fake portals onto walls? :D

First attempt, cramming as many 3mm LEDs as possible:

CHaos.jpg

That's 330 LEDs total, or 165 of each color, but the spacing could be way too close. Most walls between LEDs are less than a mm.

Different color distribution pattern:

If the above proves impossible to drill here's another attempt, this time with only 260 LEDs total and most wall spacing just over a mm.

Either way I'll probably need to send this out to be CNC'd because there' no way am I gonna be that precise manually...

This came out really nice. I like the braces around your claws, far cleaner than the ones I made for my personal build. I think I will have to find someone who does little detailed jewelery type work to make them for my next build.

Thanks!

I was quite happy with those braces as well considering how last minute they were but sadly I'll have to remake them. They got a little bent and some of the brazing didn't hold. I'm not sure why, could the chromed little tubes, could be the wire I forgot to clean or the regular solder just isn't good enough. I'll have to look up what's the best way to go about this. I was going to use brass tubes from a hobby store but the nearest one I dropped by only had bigger sizes. I'm hoping that if I get the right size brass tube and rods and the proper brazing solder it should be strong enough for more than one con.

In other news, 200 Blue and 200 Amber 3mm LEDs ordered from ebay :D

You know, I don't know if LEDs are intense enough, but I always envisioned making a little tiny gobo of the portal shape to hide behind the lens aperture, to get the portal shape projected on the wall. But I think you'd need an actual projector bulb and parabolic reflector to throw light that coherently through the gobo.

Still, awesome ASHPD!!

I must say, this is REALLY impressive work. The Portal games are two of the BEST FPS style, IMHO. :thumbsup

Any chance we could get you to scan the template drafting you did? :love
A good chance actually, but probably in about a 4-6 weeks. The current ones are very rough, not really consistent and the final product is different in quite a few places.

Since plans/templates are suppose to make your life easier and not induce hairloss I don't think I'll be doing any favors by releasing the current stuff. I do have plans to revise the templates but I need to get some other things out of the way first.
