Done / Completed Phoenix Props V2 CNC - Kylo Ren Crossguard- preorders closed

Re: Phoenix Props V2 CNC - Kylo Ren Crossguard

The scaling looks a ton better than the V1 and the deep detail section looks fantastic. I am very glad that I sold my V1 (which was still fantastic) and got on this run. IF the prototype looks that good, then good lord. The production pieces are going to be outrageously good. Between this and my acquisition of an Orbital Machining Obi TPM, it's shaping up to be a very good Lightsaber year for me.

Re: Phoenix Props V2 CNC - Kylo Ren Crossguard

I hope the pre-order closes soon, so we can find out what the secret extra is :)

Re: Phoenix Props V2 CNC - Kylo Ren Crossguard

how is the other side?

A guys gotta have some secrets!

I got word the prototypes have shipped to me, destined to arrive on the 5th.

Once I have it in hand, I will do up photos of the piece from all angles and details and note anything that I will be modifying.

Maximum of 5 days after this is posted and shared, I will close the run. Then it's locked.

I'll be making a handful of extras that can be sold later for late comers but it will come at a different cost as those who have been in on the run from the start should be rewarded for being so patient and supportive.

I'm super happy that we are getting closer!

I have the V1, but just sent a deposit for this one also.

Re: Phoenix Props V2 CNC - Kylo Ren Crossguard

Attention all fence sitters!!!

Kylo V2 prototypes have arrived. Photos below.

There are some fixes/updates that I'll be having done before the full production, but this gives you a sneak peak at the actual product in it's nearly final form.

I will be closing orders in 7 days. After this pre-order is closed. So if you're on the fence for ordering one waiting for a prototype, now is the time to move it or lose it.

There will be a few extras ordered but these will cost a lot more vs preorder. So if you want one... now is the time.

Re: Phoenix Props V2 CNC - Kylo Ren Crossguard

You mentioned the anodizing Dday. I had a thought.

what about looking into a copper/brass colored anodizing, so we have the benefit of excellent paint adherence, AND can weather it and have the correct underlying color show through In the worn spots...?

Re: Phoenix Props V2 CNC - Kylo Ren Crossguard

Also, absolutely fantastic update. Thank you. Hope there aren't any fence sitters after this one.

I'm personally opposed to the idea of anodizing into a copper/brass color.
At least for Prop Shop versions, there seems to be silver coloring areas beneath some exposed brass weatherings.
While you can always add silver on top of brass color, it would look unnatural as the natural layering depth goes from (black layer -> copper -> silver metal surface)
Also, in terms of versatility, clear anodizing or no anodizing would give the most flexibility to other ppl who plan to paint this in different ways.

Re: Phoenix Props V2 CNC - Kylo Ren Crossguard

Yeah that makes sense. Just an idea. I've seen some pretty impressive examples of copper anodizing lately. I doubt it would be too hard to break through it a bit with some steel wool.

Perhaps present the the option for everyone to have their saber done in clear, copper, or not at all? Only if cost effective of course.

I DEFINITELY DO NOT want anodizing, except MAYBE the red bottom cap. The rest would be best raw for paint and accurate weathering/pant techniques.

I had banged this though around a bit but decided to stay away from it in the end. Each person has their own vision of what the saber should look like in the end and I don't want to take that away from those who do. Some sabers we have seen have copper base, some silver. We know the propshop is printed aluminium. So if you'r replicating propshop it has to be aluminium base vs a copper base. Then some screen sabers are different again. So many variations I'd rather just leave it raw and let people take it where their own imagination takes them.

The clear anodizing was only used as a way to even the finish up a bit. But since it's painted anyways a 100% uniform base coat isn't ultra important. The endcap will be red anodized, and if someone doesn't want this they can strip it off and repaint, but I think weathering the anodized cap will be easy and will provide a great finish... as long as they get the color right :D. This means there may be some parts in the detail areas that need a little extra help prior to painting as those details are really hard to clean up in the cost for the run.

I know parfaitelumiere; is a professional polisher and could turn a raw saber into a polished masterpiece, if this is what you're looking for, send him a PM.

I also think the process I want to make will be tricky, not sure, and costly, so I think your anodised finish is a good choice for easier finish using paint.
You may keep some raw machining for people who make express request, to make chemical or electrolytic process on raw aluminum, evn it will be a hard way.
I think the already polished stuff is not a good choice, because they may do it quickly for money and ruin the details.

What are your sources for the printed material on propshop lightsaber?
