I'm thinking something like the inside of a watch but with tiny bare muscles rather than springs. Gleaming metal with shinny, wet looking muscle tissue and tendons. Some glowing, irregular, slimy looking 'organ' as it's power source.

Just what came into my head when you described your idea.
