That'd be amazing.

So would you recommend that a 23.5 inch head would be a good fit, or would it be too small?

Aeric

So I tried to get some shots of how the helmet sits out of the box. I have a 23" melon, and have onlu trimmed the helmet as needed to get my head inside.

The first two are the best reference. I pulled the helmet all the way forward, and pushed it all the way back the way I want it to sit. You can see there is at least an inch difference front to back.

From the front for reference of the width.

Top down in an awkward position to show the space between my nose and the front of the helmet.

All in I'm comfortable saying that it should fit up to a 25" melon as long as it's normally proportioned.

I'm really liking the distressed/used look of the one on the bottom. Is that overtop of the Rub 'n Buff, or is that the actual colour of the buckle showing through?

The one that looks more distressed (bottom) is a couple colours of Rub 'N Buff layered in a couple ways, sanded back off, and then reapplied. I was too heavy with the rub on the light grey buckle, and it wouldn't get the depth I wanted. If that one were to be saved, it would have to get a coat of paint. I used that one to get an idea for how the rub works though.

I moved to the darker grey one to further practice with the rub, and I'm happy with how it has been turning out, but will actually use the darkest buckle for the costume. I want it to get a deeper range of silver in the buckle. On the next try I'll be lighter on the application to avoid filling the divots with any rub to really have them dark.

So while I was casting the buckles last night, I thought I'd use up some of the left over mix. I was wandering around looking what to cast for fun (and in a rush) and stumbled onto a shape that may be a good base for the thigh switches.......

Well I finally got around to ordering my jacket and took a chance on the Haynes long sleeve shirt. I ordered the denim blue, which I think looks closest to whats in the movie.

I have a lot of catching up to do on the costume if I want to be ready two weeks from now. This weekend I shouldn't have anything planned, so it's just me and my projects.

Hey Jackal do you have a list of materials you used for making the mold? I can get the clay (unless is specific kind of clay lol), I see you used "Dragon skin" I don't know the differences on silicone my self but i bet i could find something. But i don't know what you used for the cast itself or if you recommend anything specific.

Further down the rabbit hole I go. lol I managed to find a shop that has all the leather I've been looking for. I went an picked up a couple belt blanks, some strand and flat section blank.

Now again, I'm not going for movie quality replica, just something that looks the part. Here is some reference pics for those interested though.

For molding the buckle I used clay and the Dragon Skin mold making silicone and the Dragon Skin two part plastic with some colour. Super easy on both accounts. 50/50, mix tap, and pour. Easy as can be.

I got to work last night on a couple of the small bits. I have a blank buckle to use and marked it for cutting to ensure it disappears behind the buckle I made. Then I got to start painting some of the smaller details on the davy kit. I'll be hitting them with a little rub 'n buff later tonight.

The belt needed some work though. As you can see, it looks way too new for such a beat up buckle.

So I spent part of the night beating up the belt and hitting it with acetone. After the acetone, I boiled up a nice dark coffee and set the belt in the coffee to soak overnight. I rotated it this morning to stain the belt a couple different ways.

Looking at the half chaps I decided to do the same to them as well. This is a shot of one before rolling it up and setting it aside.

Hope it works. :confused

I think I had those exact same half-chaps once! Sadly, I don't have them any more. Mine would have looked nice and beat up, since I wore them to ride in for years. But they would have smelled like a barn, lol. Coffee might be a better fragrance to have when you're wearing them to a con! ;)

That's the buckle i plan on using in mine...but i'm just going to glue the clay sculpt one i did on top of it.

But if you can weld though, that would be the ideal way to do it!

Are you gonna be at D*Con, Maniac? Just noticed that you're from Birmingham. Asked cause I live in Atlanta and will be attending.
