Peter Davison Celery

Alright, alright, laugh it up! I need 'the decorative vegetable' to complete the 5th Doctor outfit that Mrs. Ward is working on at the moment.

I'm thinking the best way would be to find a good specimen of real celery, glaze it somehow, then attach a pin mechanism to the back. Does this sound about right? What would be the best varnish to use?

Um... seems like it would just be more feasable to use a fresh piece of celery each time. call me kooky...

Or... you maybe could cobble something together out of the fake flowers at a craft store.

Fresh celery is really the only thing that looks closest to what Davison wore at times. Varnishing it may not be a bad idea but it's not a route we went. A fresh stick for every day would do it.

Otherwise for our first run we used this fake celery though you have to break an end off the stalk

Varnishing celery seems to be more effort than is needed though. Kinda like the old apocryphal story about how NASA dumped a lot of money into developing a pen that could write in zero gravity, only to find the the Russians used a pencil.

Take a fresh piece and cast it? I mean , It should stay in good chape long enough. I know diaticians use fake fruits and vegetables in their classes. There should be some fake celery somewhere.

I'm rather surprised no one has done one of these before-AFAIK-frankly, I'd love to have one in my meager "Who" collection!

You have to laugh at yourself being a Who fan.

For some reason, I'd feel like a wally toting a real piece of celery round on my lapel, but getting a reproduction stick, feels like, 'score'!:lol

Dunno... real celery would be screen accurate for the purists, and I'm quite fond of the smell of fresh celery.

And it seems somewhat... anal retentive to go to the trouble of casting celery, although I have to admit there is a certain amount of geek cred in it if you can pull it off.

I'm thinking a piece of celery would look good next to my other props and Who stuff :lol

A real piece sags after about five seconds. Believe me! I've looked around for fake stuff, but have only been able to find the sticks, without the leaves.

After some friends attempted the real celery stick it sounds like that is indeed not the way to go. They wilt fast, you run the risk of getting celery juice on your lapel and it's just impractical.

Here's an updating link to the place we found our plastic celery for ouor 2007/08 coat:

You have to break off a piece and then paint the end green, but it works and it's durable.

The ebay seller who used to have them had the best ones though IMHO and that's what I still use.

The original from what I gather was a fabric/woven type of celery like high end fake flowers. So that's the ideal to shoot for if you can find one. Otherwise I remember who custom knit fake celery out of yarn on the LJ comms if you want me to refer you.
