Pep stormtrooper (with time-lapse)

Hey all,

I know this isn't the most original thing to make but hey, it's still fun to do.
I decided ot make a pep stormtrooper closely following Terra1's thread... that did not work. It's not anyone's fault but my own, it was all going perfectly until the fibre glass warped the back of the helmet beyond repair. So then i made another helmet which did not look right after the pepakurering stage. HOWEVER i have now started to succeed :)D:D:D:D). I made the pep and then decided that i would first do a few coats of wood glue THEN do resin and fibreglass, just to strengthen the helmet a bit.

TIME-LAPSE TIME
I thought it would be pretty cool to do a series of time-lapses just because time-lapses are awesome :D. I did not have the right software (or hardware) at the time of making the pepakura but i got it by the time i started wood glueing and will be doing more time-lapses as i do stuff the the helmet.

There is a playlist of 3 videos at the moment.

I think it may have been warped a bit but looking at the photos below would y'all say it has or not? And if so do you think it has warped beyond repair.

This is my first pepakura (started off with the hard stuff :facepalm) and i am wondering if i even need to use fibreglass because i have used 3 layers of wood glue on this and it is as solid as a rock in some places. if i just keep layering it will that be fine for the bondo stage?

Can´t help you with regards to your question, since I´ve never pepped before.
But I can say that you did a good job for your first project, warped or not!
There´s always room for improvements, even for experienced prop-builders.

How come you decided to use wood glue instead of the usual resin?

most people would give the outside a coat of resin to firm it up then fibreglass the inside to make it solid.

to answer your question regardless of how you've firmed it up i would fibreglass the inside, it's just 'the done thing'. i can't say whether the wood glue would be good enough on it's own but if it's anything like resin i would say no, it won't be so fibreglass it. doesn't take long ;)

don't be afraid of fibreglassing.. it's the easiest thing in the world (a bit of spray mount works wonders when first laying the matting down. helps stop it from rucking up when applying resin)

The reason i used wood glue is because i saw on the 504th forums that it was a good alternative to fibreglass. Also on my previous attempt at this i used resin and fibreglass (i think incorrectly in hindsight) but it warped it so bad i couldn't fit my head in it anymore. I will put a layer of resin on the inside (wait to dry) then spray mount some fibre glass with resin over the top over the top. Does that sound like a plan that will work? and any ideas on how to minimize warping? and by spray mount u mean this? UK Office Direct

Thanks a bunch :D

yeh thats the stuff, general spray adhesive, that kind of thing. just creates a tacky surface to help lay down the fibreglass in place before you resin it.

ahh ok, i must admit i've not heard of people using wood glue.

didn't realise it was an alternative.

just did a quick google on it and on the 405th i noticed a tutorial.. it does say

This is NOT a replacement for Fiberglass resin. It is only to be used if fiberglass resin is not an option. (mom won’t let you or you can’t get it in your country)

Tutorial: Wood Glue Pepakura Method

by the looks of it they just used wood glue instead of resin, but still used fibreglass to re-enforce the inside.

in my opinion if you can use fibreglass and resin then do so. you don't need to resin the inside and let it dry first, you can just start with the spray mount and fibreglass matting then brush/dab the resin over it. do it in small sections and don't saturate it (this is what can cause warping). the good thing is resin cures pretty quickly so that'll help minimise any issues.

if you don't want to use the spray mount and want to resin the inside then just do a thin coat, lay the matting down onto that (use the resin to stick it down) again do it in small sections and once thats done and the resins cured then go over it again to properly cover it and you should be good to go :)

just made myself a gauntlet for a project and doing things in thin coats, small batches, i didnt get ANY warping at all. i resined the outside, spray adhesive inside, stuck on fibreglass matting, then resined inside, let dry and then did the same again so i have 2 layers of fibreglass. the things rock solid :D
