Has anyone painted one of the 16" Masudaya robots? :confused They are are made of some type of vinyl or soft flexible plastic.

I would appreciate any tips that your could offer on priming and painting these robots.

Many thanks for your help!

With those vinyls you have to generally avoid any solvent based paint, particularly lacquers. Water based is your friend here.

Although I would imagine the semi-new Krylon plastic paints in rattle cans might be fine. Never tried but they are supposed to be good for plastics.

I've heard that Krylon grey primer works fine in vinyl. Once that dries, you can throw on any paint you like?

Test this first before going full throttle.

I used acrylics on mine -- I believe I painted these directly on the vinyl.

So far it is holding up spledidly -- been more than 5 years since I painted it.

Not sure exact brand -- I MAY have even brush painted the silver. I'll try to take a pic.

Hey thanks for the help guys! And I'd really like to see some pics of how yours came out DrMcoy. :love

Just one more question please. Did you scuff up the surface before priming and/or painting? If so, what did you use?

Wash your kit with Dawn dish soap first! Then shot it with some primer and go with acrylics! This will up fine for a long time! You can also hit it with a clear coat to protect it.

Sure glad to help! Love building vinyl kits you can use heat to reshape depending on what your building you might want to fill the body as to not let the vinyl collasp over time. I use plaster of paris to fill the legs of my figures and this adds heft to it also. Just some xtra hints for you.

If I may ask what robot are you building? I stopped building vinyl kits cuz they take up so much room! They are fun to build how ever and right now I'm hooked on building kits of the B9 robot from lost in space. IfI can be of any help shoot me a line.

Here's a pic of mine -- I don't think I primed it -- just washed in soap and water and then brushed on acrylic paint -- I used Tamiaya I believe, as they are a little higher quality, but craft store acrylics might be just as good.
