Painting/preserving Shoes for display purposes

Hey Guys,
Kind of a weird question, as it's not "prop related" per se, but I'm making a "Golden Boot" trophy for the Soccer League I run. I have bought a Trophy base, just looking for ideas what to do about the actual "Gold Boot."

I have a pair of new cleats that I never wore, just trying to figure out how to seal and harden the shoes. Professionally Bronzing is too expensive, so I'm going the route of Gold Metallic paint.

My thought would be to Spray Glue the shoe a few times, do you think that would do the trick (then of course prime and paint?) I want it to be fairly hard as this trophy will be around for a few years and handled.

Thanks for the help!
