Painting brass?

Anyone have a good source for a sturdy prop paint which can be used on brass? I need something to stick a stripe to the brass barrel of a laser module which will be mounted on the front of a car to match the CGI laser Disney composited on the car in the film. I figured someone on here does enough steampunk that they know more than the fellows at the local hobby shop. I have a lab oven available to bake on the finish if that makes any difference.

The only ideas I had:
- whatever Tamiya and Testors have available at the hobby shop
- auto touch-up paint available from the dealer
- clearcoat it afterward?

Thanks

I guess get an automotive etch-primer spray bomb and check the materials it's rated as good for? If brass is included hit it with that then any old paint on top of that...

PS what is that? Herbie Goes Postal? :)

While it is not paint, have you thought about enameling the piece?

Your lab oven may not get hot enough to do it, but if you are able to heat the piece up to about 800 degrees Fahrenheit you could have a baked on layer of glass that should be pretty durable. You can get powders in just about any color, and even ones that are semi-translucent. Rio Grande has a large selection of the powders and other supplies if you are interested www.riogrande.com.

Never thought of emameling the piece - will try this myself1

something I use that works really well is high heat spray paint for stoves, and it sticks even better once it has been heated, but it works well without as well. You can get it in spray cans.

what about Brass Black? It's a chemical blackening agent that's easy to use and easy to get. You can get it from Amazon for under $6.
