Oz The Great and Powerful (Post-release)

Awesome. You can tell that they really tried to do 3D right! I am really liking Franco's performances more and more.

Don't expect this film to replace the Wizard Of Oz, but it does compliment it nicely.

Saw it at 3:30 today in 2D with my 14 year old daughter, it was great. :thumbsup

Might go see it in 3D next.

Held very true to the design, sets and costumes of the original. The production design was amazing.

Line was 60' long to get in the theater and we got there 1/2 hour before show.

At the end most of the people in the theater clapped.

Very glad to see people liking this movie! I've read some very mixed and scathing reviews and it almost made me wonder if they even saw the same movie I did.

Saw Oz in 3D tonight. Although there were a few things I disliked, I really enjoyed it overall, and loved the parallels followed by the story in my own life...

I also got some old dude's number while waiting in line.

I thought it was just about perfect.

They could've tweaked a thing or two along the way (like green witch make-up); but, Sam Raimi really outdid himself. Just enough of that old school feel along with the computer stuff. This really felt like Oz and even though it ran long (just over 2 hours) it still didn't feel like we had seen enough... but, we've seen this world before and it felt like home.

Just a great ride... just so much better than Burton's Alice In Wonderland and overall just about the best family movie (that I could enjoy, too) in a very long time.

Oz made me feel like a kid again.

I do wish they could've used some of the music from the 1939 film.

A few thing's that bugged me...

The green witch make-up could've been much better, the eyebrows just bugged me.

Zach Braf as the monkey wasn't as annoying as I expected - but, still seemed a little too much for the monkey.

The green witch looked way short... and it was too obvious that it was added on and too far away from the actress' voice.

But, even with all that... this was an amazing ride and a perfect modern follow-up to the classic.

I saw it this past Sunday at the El Capitan Theater in 3D with Dolby ATMOS surround sound! Wow! The tornado scene was incredible with things actually flying around behind us! 3D was good as well especially when things came out of the screen through the black bars on either side during the B&W intro. CGI was not over the top and was actually believable for many of the landscapes.

B&W intro was a little too long and the nods/references to the 1939 movie was a little too much.

It was also nice to see all the costumes that were on display. See here in this link!

Overall, I liked it. My husband was disappointed, because he was hoping it would be more connected to the books, because he's a big fan. I always enjoy James Franco's performance, and the monkey was great. Rachel Weisz never really does that much for me, but she was ok. I liked Glinda quite a bit. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Mila Kunis was probably the weakest point for me. I liked her at the beginning, but after her transformation, I found her to be irritating. Also, why didn't the witch wear a more traditional dress? It looked like one of those cheap sexed-up versions from Spirit the Halloween store. All of the other costumes and visuals looked great.
Edited to add: My favorite character was the Little China Girl. I want a porcelain doll of her :)

As a HUGE fan of the classic, I loved this film. In 3D, it made me wish Oz was a real place to go for a vacation. I will definitely be seeing it again.

Joey King, the young actress playing China Girl, steals the show. If you've not seen her in Ramona and Beezus (with Selina Gomez as her older sister), check it out, she is an amazing talent for her age.

I went into the theater not having read anything about this film, so I had no idea what I was in for. Overall I was not disappointed. There were things I would have loved to have seen, the origin of the Ruby Slippers most of all, as they were so important in the 1939 movie, and the book (as Silver Shoes). But, it was not to be. They hinted at the Lion's reason for his cowardly ways, but only fleetingly (if indeed it was the same lion). They also hinted at a possible origin of the Scarecrow, and you are left with an educated guess about the Tin Man ("We can build ANYTHING!").

Still, as a stand alone story, I loved it. At least we got to see a good, alternate take (from Wicked) about the witches' back stories, and the Wizard's origin fits well with the classic.

I would recommend it to both lovers the classic and movie lovers alike. There is something for everyone.

Oh, but I think this movie set up the slippers perfectly for a second film.

After Glinda destroyed Evanora's amulet/pendant that gave her power (Glinda had a wand, Theodora a ring), she will need a new source of power... cue ruby/silver slippers in the sequel.

I hope you are right. It may depend on if they can get the rights to use Ruby Slippers. But, from what I read from the link above, it seems they would have the right to introduce the Silver Shoes from the original novel. In any event, a sequel is most welcome.

The sequel has been announced... but so far, no Raimi.

I think Raimi was key in keeping a very strong feel to the 1939 film... without going too far to unleash the wrath of Warner Brothers.
