It's a shame the owner removed the tape from each pieces which were annotated with specific film titles....as well as adding velcro and so on.

It should have been left untouched inmo.:unsure

Same here, sounds a little bit like the ESB helmet with Star Wars patch on the back to me...
Thanks for sharing this picture as i wasn´t able to save Christies´s pictures. :):thumbsup
Is this the only publicly available picture of the suit?

    Right shin is not ANH.

Could you explain what you mean?

I don't understand which 'tape' or 'velcro' you are talking about :confused

    No probs.

As far as I know yes, but Jez /starwarshelmets must have a ton of other pics I assume.

Here is a super blury one of the owner and is friend trying the suits in 1993.

Well from what I can make out in the blurry pic is that it features the ANH cover strip hiding the join unlike the left shin with ROTJ style one side overlapping the other.

Take a closer look. They are both assembled in the same manner with the overlap rather than butt joined.

Great pics. Thanks for showing these. I am hoping we get to see a bit more of these items and hear more of the back story.

I would love to see more of the helmet pictured as well.

    Cheers Chris

Really? I don't think that is surprising at all. I would have expected about $250k.

The estimate was between 8 to 10k with it being a bit of a miss match that and the fact that not so long ago a vader suit didn't even make the reserve.

They really botched the estimate. Many of us could have bought it for that.

Im not surprised at all by the price.. A Stormtrooper is now a part of pop culture and always will be.

I'm hoping that other people with original suits they may be hiding will be tempted to sell and bring them out into the light of day so everybody can see them and enjoy them. It`s alot of money to be tempted with.I just wish I had the cash to spend on something like this.I could always sell my house I guess.:rolleyes

    From the lot description:

"believed to be elements made for both of the first two films of 20th Century Fox/Lucasfilm Star Wars trilogy...."

If the description said, "a Stormtrooper costume used in the film, "Star Wars", I could see the $321,422 selling price. The "believed to be" description is not definitive, so for me, the lot was not worth the selling price.

Not that it matters since the bidders thought otherwise :).

It is my (very strong) opinion, and the opinion of other's I hold in high regard, that the suit sold was a combination of original screen used pieces, and pieces that were not used in the films but rather for promotional purposes.

Seems unlikely someone paying that much for it, wouldn't know what they were getting.

And just because the two right people were in the room this time does not guarantee future results.

Auctions can be a crap shoot.

surely whoever sold it is going to cop for capitol gains tax which i think is 28%, possibly more the government were thinking of putting it up to 40%

    Someone obviously wanted this badly!

I never thought it would reach as much as it did. I bet the owner is kicking himself for giving the other suit away (and it was the better suit IMO).

Make no mistake that 2nd suit is significantly better that this - not least as it had the ANH/ESB helmet.

Personally-speaking I'm a little surprised it topped the £200k mark but as Mic has said, you only need 2 people in the room that REALLY want it (oh and have the funds to match :lol)

However I was pretty convinced that it was probably THE only ESB Mk2 suit that was used in the movie. It seems clear that most of the leftovers from ANH were adequate for ESB shooting, except for a few final Bespin scenes where additional parts were required. As per my preview of this, it seemed clear to me that this was a suit made from leftover ANH parts and newly vac-formed (ESB Mk2) parts that John Mollo's team had to hastily put together in time for filming. After the work I did a couple of years ago with Mr Mollo, plus some subsequent investigations - it seemed a very good bet that this was the real deal.

I'm pleased for the seller that it went for such a significant amount and am sure that the 2 bidders who drove it to that price were absolutely clear on what they were doing. I didnt have that final bit of photographic proof that would have made it 100%, but maybe they did ;)

As far as Christies estimate, I think following the problems last year with the Vader suit they really wanted to make sure they did this sale exactly by the book. So I was pleased that they contacted me and we were able to ensure this suit was presented as accurately as possible, while also generating some good publicity for the auction. It looks like it was pretty successful process.

    Cheers

    Jez

On a good day at Christies can you imagine what a full ANH suit including helmet would go for?

It just goes to show the interest in screen used SW props in still on the UP.

I wonder if Mollo initially went back to Ainsworth to see if he still had molds from 3 years earlier that he could pull new sets from...and he didn't. (Just speculation) It's just interesting that he recast existing pieces when he knew the guy who pulled the first ones was down the street. (Putting aside recent issues with the guy, of course.)

They only needed Ainsworth for the original because they couldn't vac form them themselves. Maybe the props department had the ability to by the time of Empire and didn't see the reason to outsource this time as it would cost more. Just a guess.

Wouldn't the moulds have been returned to Elstree Studios after Ainsworth finished forming the suits?
