ORCA scratch build

Well I'm deep in it now, I must remember this is the fun bit of all the research, I had a list of things I wanted the change from version one but it turns out I may have got more wrong in a way that's got me scratching my head. As I'm going along I keep getting contradictory information, which make the boat much smaller than I thought it was?

Woke up this morning and said lets have a go at sculpting Bruce in Blender as I do need to make a remote control version at some point. this is only my second go at sculpting. and yes I did notice I missed one of the fins out so went back and put in in wile the video was uploading.
If the 1/9th scale shark took 3 pieces to assemble, I can't even begin to think how many pieces you need to print for a 1/6th scale shark. Did you get any sleep last night? Ok here's one of those questions from left field (baseball term), in your years of working, having you ever found a material that could be applied to that print that would feel like shark skin? This Bruce is going to be so big, a course skin texture would be unbelievable. My emotions are just running wild with all your work. Loving every minute of this Filmsy!

That's been the unanswered question for almost 50 years. They call the boat a Novi42, BUT I've seen people map out the length of orca as small as 38 feet. I have a pic on the desk top. Give me a minute and I'll post it here.

I don't know if you've seen or have this pic.

Figure out the spacing of the rungs on the mast. That might be a more useful photo measuring reference. It's gonna be some predictable/commercial number. The mast is large, straight, and easily visible from many angles.

So at the moment, I'm starting with as many real-world objects as I can or as many things I have dimensions for and putting them into my old 3D model to get an idea of proportions and find out where I've made mistakes. the cage is a good start because we know Hoopers size 5'5"

the cage take up quite a bit of space on the deck and in different shots its in different places.

the cleats, harpoon box, chum buckets, dive bottles (Neca bottle is the wrong size I have real dimensions)and the honda generator.

this is the photo that really through me the cage is nearly the full width

of the rear deck, whereas on my model it appears wider.

I've based my model on 40ft but I'm thinking the 14ft wide is too wide.
More work to be done.

Seems to me that the cage's length is the one from the rear of the Orca (pic with blonde crew member + Quint:unsure:

I had some conversations with a diehard Orca fan years ago who was interested in building a replica. (Multiple efforts to do that have been investigated/started over the years.) IIRC the accepted figure for the hull length at the time was 39 feet.

I don't know the original source of that figure. But it stuck in my mind because it doesn't sound like the product of guesswork. A person who was trying to back-engineer the length from photos would probably guess a rounder number like 40 or 38.

So with the aid DCN info. I've given my interpretation of the length. You need to be careful only to measure the center of the boat not from edge to edge as the transom is closer to the lens. I used accurate barrel (from information I gathered from an owner) for scale. so it turns out my version 1 model worked out to be 39'7". When I think 38' is more likely to be the real number. this still leaves me with a quandary as to width,
My version 1 was 13'. Most 40' NOVIs are 14' wide but that is not a rule.

this was my original drawing of model one the mast is way too big. I changed that while building. the shame is wrong I could go on Hence making Mark 2. Some things do feel right though like the cabin height at 6'5" but as I used the barrels as a scaling tool and later found out my dimensions were out this drawing can not be trusted.

that Photo is great Because it has houses in the background ie large cubes. this means I can put it in Fspy and work out the camera position and lens it was shot with. That in itself wont give me the dimension but it will give me a perfect setup to test my model's proportions
I'm getting 55mm or likely a 50mm or it was a zoom lens.
