I just posted my build up on my blog ! I'll add more to it when I upload more pics.

Re: Optimus Prime ion blaster built !!

I had been racking my brain on what to do for the details in the recessed panels in the sides of the main barrel section, and after many failed idea's that just didn't look good I had a eureka moment. It's not accurate to the toy, but my friend had this metal pin of the autobot logo he loaned me and I thought that would be a cool thing to put in the recessed area. This is my very first attempt ever at making a mold and casting anything! I read a tutorial on The Dented Helmet forum for using silicone like you buy at Walmart, etc, to make the mold and went for it!
I took a bowl of soapy water, just liquid dish soap is fine, then made a big gob of silicone in a plastic spoon about the size of a golfball, then scraped it off into the soapy water. I kinda worked it around in the water gently with my fingers for a minute and then pressed it into a small plastic box about a half inch thick. I took a foam paint brush after that and brushed a little silicone straight onto the autobot logo after dipping the logo into the soapy water itself, which apparently acts as a mold release. This got the silicone into the details better, then I pressed the pin gently into the silicone I pressed into the box and let it cure 24 hrs. The logo pin camout of the impression pretty easily with no hangups! I made a few copies using regular fiberglass resin and it came out pretty good considering !View attachment 63773

I'm going to contact Smooth-on soon about supplies for casting the whole rifle and I think I'll get some samples to try doing the logo using better materials which will hopefully produce a better result, but for what it is, I'm pretty pleased with the result.

Re: Optimus Prime ion blaster built !!

Well I have been researching methods of casting this beast and so far i'm thinking of doing a two part brush on mold with a fiberglass mothermold. Then doing a slushcast with urethane resin. I encourage any feedback, tips, warnings, etc so I can learn from the wealth of experience here on the RPF. I have watched videos on the Smooth on webste and am leaning towards their products also.

In deed this is looking amazing! Are you going to be adding an electronic sound of the gun fire!

I hope to, that's still in the "how in the heck am I gonna do this" stage. I figure once I make a cast of the original, I can put electronics in it easier because it will be more hollow.

Re: Optimus Prime ion blaster built !!

Well, it currently rocks, but with sound it will kick Megatrons metallic *****

Hey, a fellow Charlestonian!

I had an urge to make Prime's blaster, but never got around to it (cause I'm laaaazy). Yours looks absolutely amazing! Great work. Can't wait to see it painted. :love

Re: Optimus Prime ion blaster built !!

being a big Transformer geek, your Prime gun came out so awesome!!

You can easily add sound. Since your gun is big and probably has tons of room inside, I recommend getting a cheap small MP3 player, and get a speaker. All you need is to find a way to hook up batteries to the speaker or use a power supply from a wall socket. Then just download sound clips. Then add a lighting system in the tip of the barrel.

But if yu ever plan on selling copies, keep us posted. looking foward for more updates.

Amazing work! If only they had a drooling face to attach to this comment.

I was kinda of thinking of one of those micro-usb recordable greeting cards,or getting some sort of toy blaster and gutting it. I also made some resin Autobot logos for the side that can light up, just saving up for the supplies to do my first mold !

Thanks for the feedback !

Quick update, I decided since it's gonna be a little while before I make a mold of it, that I'd go ahead and paint the rifle, so I hung it up out on the patio and while I was shaking the paint can.... CRASH ! my beloved smashed intp the concrete, crushing the rear box and breaking into 3 parts.

After shedding a tear, I started to fix it right away.

I decided this would be a good time to make it so I could break the gun down into 2 pieces. This will make it easier to cast I think, and also to take it anywhere

Now I have painted it finally !!

Nooooo, that is every builders nightmare. Great idea with breaking it down into parts, it'll be much easier to make seperate molds. Have you decided on a molding method? Roto-cast or using a solid mold with a cavity piece?

The built is amazing:D I want one!.. Any room in the back for LEDs?
