Hey guys,

My first proper post here...

I just got some replacement lenses for my Oakley Pennys. Cyclops here I come!

Soooo, as you do, I'm in the process of swapping them out, but it looks as if one of my T6 screws that holds the lens in place has actually got stripped homehow :cry

My screwdriver won't get a grip on it at all - is there any way I could get the screw out and then back in again?

I tried a T7 with no luck. I can't really see the screw details cause it's so small, but it looks like the grip is worn away somehow.

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi.. you're my only hope

Thanks!

I have a pair of the Juliet or 'X-1' style shades. They have aftermarket red lenses and aftermarket 'side blinders' attached. VERY cool and always gets looks and compliments when I wear them....I will try and post pics.
As far as the screws go, I know there is some kind of thingamajig that can remove screws with the slots worn down, but not sure if they make them to accomidate those tiny screws.
Try contacting Oakley directly. If they fancy themselves good at customer service (and at the prices they charge, the better!) then they may be able to help you out...

How soft is the metal of the screw? You might be able to (gently) hammer or scrape a slot in, in order to give it some traction to unscrew.

Yes, you are correct. In X1, he wore the Juliets. In X2, he wore the Pennys.

I know GuntahKelah offered sideblinders years ago. Anyone have a current source on sideblinders?

And what red lenses did you guys grab? I've always wanted to get red ones (mine are blue) but could never find a true red color that looked just right IMO

Sorry I'm not much help on the screws...that sucks :unsure

take a sharp phillips head screwdriver, secure the sunglasses somewhere, and take a hammer and with a few firm (not too hard) blows, the phillips head will dig into the screw... . you should be able to have enough leverage to screw it out then

Oakley did release Ruby lenses for each version. Some look very nice but still not that deep red as seen in the movie. If memory serves me right, the ones for the movie were actually painted a certain red to give that dark red effect. Marsden (who played Cyclops) could see out of them but with the paint mixed with water painted over top the lenses, it would cause him severe headaches. Obviously not a solution for every day wear to get a cool red effect.

Oakley lenses are honestly the best I've ever owned. Their tests on their website speak for themselves which is why a lot of motorcycle riders love wearing them.

I did a quick search on eBay and it looks like someone is making a hue that is similar to the movie version. He mentioned the ruby colored lens with a purple hue to it. Not an official Oakley though, just a knock off replacement.

There are only two ways I know of extracting a screw that which has a stripped head. First way is with an impact driver, which isn't useful in this situation. The second way is to take a small file and scrape a slot in what's left of the screw head. Once you've got a deep enough groove, you should be able to get in with a flat head screwdriver.

Hope this helps.

You could try a small hex wrench.

Once the torx gets worn, the little 'teeth' get stripped.

If you have a small enough hex, you may be able to remove the screw.

If you just cannot for any reason get the grip on the head with a screw driver tip of any sort... You could try an ice pick and a miniscule amount of JB Weld. You would need a replacement screw but you can get those from Oakley or maybe a jeweler?

Thanks for the tips, folks. For those who were asking...:

  • In X-Men, the used the Juliets
  • In X-2 and The Last Stand, they used the Pennys
  • Custom Sideblinders were fitted for the X-men use, they look so much more awesome with sideblinders attached. I wish Oakley sold these!
  • I got my lenses on eBay, the problem with most custom red lenses is the reflection colour changes depending on the angle of light hitting them. The ones you want are mirror red lenses, where the reflection stays red regardless of what angle you look at them from. The lenses I got are like this, but are slightly more transparent than the Oakley Ruby lenses. I'm hoping it won't be an issue in outdoor light, though.

I'll post comparison pics when I'm done, if I can get this darned screw out. I'm also waiting for some sideblinders to arrive.. will be sure to post some pics when I'm all done and dusted.

I picked up a Hex Key set at lunch today so hopefully this will allow me to get done what I need. Failing that, I'll go into a jeweler's or something and see if they can help me out.

Thanks again folks!

I actually bought one of these aftermarket lenses for my juliets. They are heavily optically distorted. I dont know if these were cut for previous generations of Juliets, but I have the 2009 model, and when I fit these on and look through them, I get really dizzy. Its like the lenses magnified my vision or something. try walking in a straight light, tough luck, because thats how horrible my lenses were. just my 2 bits.

Good to know! I'll stay away from those.

OK, the hex key didn't work. Guess I've got to trust a jeweler here with my Pennys, but given that Oakley don't make them any more and how much they cost me.. I'm a bit hesitant :(

I've only seen a pair of lenses on Ebay once that had been made with the same process as the ones from the movie. Never again though. You can tell by the silver mirror coating on the inside. I was able to make a pair once but sold them like an idiot, my biggest prop regret ever!

The ones on there now all change color at some angle, never actually staying red. I don't know why they can make blue mirrored lenses without color change, but not red, I've never understood that...
