One of the stupidest thing's Disney did with TRON.....

All I have to say is that after all these years now and with the EXTREMELY HIGH amount of marketing they are doing to promote "TRON: Legacy" they absolutely failed in one area that could have made them a lot right now...

RE-RELEASE THE FIRST FILM ON DVD AND FIRST RELEASE BLU-RAY EDITION.

Seriously right now for anyone that doesn't own it this is one of the hardest movies to even come by right now and you would THINK with the generation gap of people who haven't seen the first film would be very curious to see it before "Legacy".

Are they planning some super big ultimate edition with new visuals to the original TRON? Does anyone know why they totally missed even putting this back out in stores?

Sorry, but I think Disney's failure to do this missed out on a lot of money they could have made making it available again to everyone. It's not on-demand on TV, you can't watch it on Netflix, there's not even a projected date when it will be available on physical disc Netflix....

Thankfully one of my co-workers brought me his 20th anniversary edition to borrow this weekend. It's been years since I've seen it and do enjoy this movie a lot. I wasn't willing to pay $80-$150+ on Ebay for it.

Okay that's my rant. To Disney, in the words of Seth Meyers..... "REALLY???!!?!?!!"

You are right. All they needed to do is take a page from the old Lucas playbook.

I've heard about a LOT of people trying to track a copy down.

Remember snow white?

Remember Cinderella?

Remember... ANY and EVERY Disney movie ever made?

Yeah. IDK why, but this is there thing. They would rather you want it... than buy it. I guess?

That and maybe they wanted the kids of today to see the trailers and think OOH COOL! That looks better than avatar! Maybe they did NOT want those same kids to see the very dated visuals of the original and lose interest in seeing the movie?

IDK that is all I can come up with.

Good thing my friend has it ripped in HD. ;) They actually already did clean up the visuals and colors. I guess they are doing more before the BR release?

i had this from a while ago and had no idea the prices it was going for now, just bought it last year at best buy for like $16...

Wow, I didn't realize it was so hard to come by. I've had the 20th Anniversary DVD version from the moment it hit the shelves.

I figured Disney must be planning to do something with it. Granted it was by another studio but maybe it could be like what was done with the Day the Earth Stood Still where that film was released with the original movie as additional bonus content on the remake's DVD/BluRay. Maybe they think selling it right now will dampen the folks willing to buy it in 6 months with the Tron Legacy version (?). Just a wild guess...

I'm kind of surprised Disney has been pushing Tron Legacy as much as they have. I'm NOT suprised they aren't doing much of anything with the original. They love to sit on their red-headed step-child properties like that (and the Rocketeer.) They won't do anything with them and they won't let anyone else do anything either. I will never understand the way they think.

But at least Tron got it's 20th Anniversary edition with some nice extras. No such luck with the Rocketeer...

I suspect that since it'll look SO BAD to their current target audience, they're probably trying to downplay Legacy as a sequel and market it as its own entity. Stupid decision, but I bet that's it.

EDIT: beat me to it, E-wan!

It's certainly a deliberate move. It's been pulled everywhere. That's why the ebay prices are so inflated. It'll die back down when they release the blu-ray next spring.

I don't personally take it as a slight to the first film, they just want to give Legacy the chance to stand on its own. If they really wanted everyone to forget the first, they'd find a way to pull it from all the HD channels that are still streaming it. They also wouldn't have paid for the recent restoration -- supervised by Lisberger -- that will be the forthcoming blu ray.

Ha!! The only reason I watch the original TRON was because of my interest in Legacy. I couldn't find it so I downloaded a bootleg via bit torrent. They wanna make it hard for me to find a movie then fine... I have zero problem with finding a perfect DVD quality version somewhere online. And that's exactly what I did.

The reason they haven't re-released it is because test audiences laughed throughout the whole movie and Disney is afraid it might kill interest in the new one.

No joke.

just watched it for the first time on netflix a couple months ago but now I notice its not available for streaming and the dvd says "Save" (which typically means its not available yet)

Sounds like disney is purposely hiding it to me.

Yeah, I really wanted to pick this up and watch it again to refresh my memory about the film (havent watched it in years). I really don't want to pay the big bucks for it now.

I can remember holding the 20th anniversary dvd in best buy and debating on whether I should buy it when it came out all those years ago. I ended up not getting it. :cry

My son (8) loves the original. He has watched it 3 times and really is hounding me to see the new one so I don't but the crappy quality argument.

I'll have to preview the new one before he can see it and I'm hoping he will be able to, otherwise I'll be on his s**t list for a while.

I don't know what kind of content rules you have for him, but I was delighted to find out that the movie earned a PG rating. Should increase the number of families attending substantially. :thumbsup

A Podcast that discusses Disney news (Jim Hill Media) also stated that they were having issues with cleaning up the imagery and adding better color to the now faded copies. If it is going to Blu Ray Disney wants to ensure the best quality for release.

Not REALLY a spoiler but...

from what I have read in reviews no one even kisses in this movie. So no sexual stuff and only animated de-rezzing type violence. I understand wanting to see it first so don't go on my opinion. But it looks like if the first one was OK, this one will be too! :)

That much on Evilbay? wow...maybe I should toss my DVD copy on Evilbay. I have the 20th Anniversary edition already and the other copy is the first one still in its unopened box. I'll have to think about this. I think I may even have a copy of tron on Laserdisc...wonder if thats worth anything?

When I recently re-watched Tron after decades, I was surprised how simple it was. Pushing the envelope at the time but basic now. And short.

The bike chase is the only stand out. If it was a Lucas flick 60% would be redone.

Hope so, I hate being the bad guy.
