Oblivion (Post-release)

This is on the Best Buy extras disk. I've only watched the Drone feature, but it alone makes this version one to have.

Drone Generation
Time and Space: Inside the Odyssey
Beautiful Desolation
The bike of the Future
Shelter Below the Surface

Update -> Watched all the features. All are excellent, behind the scenes pieces primarily concentrating on the making of the stuff and locations. Right up my alley.

Thanks! For the first time ever, I bought 2 DVD versions - Target & Best Buy to get all that I wanted. The Best Buy extras disc is worth it.

Being in UK I dont think we have option of getting the version with extra disc :(

Not released yet here, but have the Bluray steelbook on order with Amazon

As I've said, I'm a huge fan of this film. Saw it three times in the theater, once on my iphone5 (surprisingly watchable!) and once on the blu-ray.

Got the Best Buy package, and the extra third disc really is a Best Buy exclusive. The third disc is in a little sleeve inside and there's only a sticker on the outside packaging describing it's inclusion. Even the extra behind the scenes programs are presented with in the same high quality and precision as the movie itself.

There are many aspects of this film that add to it's appeal.

-No "shakey cam" used at all. Instead, it is filmed in the classic style of all my favorite films.

-Camera takes are long, as opposed to the "machine gun editing" we see in so many films today.

-Everything looks real and totally believable. Whatever they did using cgi sure isn't evident.

The technology, the bubble ship, motorbike, and everything they actually designed and built for the film are all amazing. This extra effort on their part lends to the believability of what's on the screen.

-The extra effort that the director took to film as much as they could "in camera" really paid off!

-Watched the deleted scenes. It's funny, but I'm glad they deleted them; the movies works better without them.

This is just a perfect film. No director's cut necessary. This IS the director's cut!:thumbsup

I don't know, I think they should have left the "medical kit" scene in. And the initial landing at the football field
makes more sense in the original version. It's wierd in the final cut of the film he says he's going in hot... and
then oh so casually puts on a ballcap... and gets his toolbox out... and meanders over to the drone. That's
not what "I" would call going in hot. :D

Overall though, I agreed with pretty much everything you said. :)

This movie hit an emotional chord with me very similar to Vanilla Sky. Two totally different movies but the love story aspect was very similar in that there was this realization of a past lost love.
I have to admit that this movie really surprised me I totally ignored it Because when they showed the trailer it was in between two or three other movies with Morgan Freeman. I mean seriously why was he even in this movie?

Because... he's... MORGAN FREEMAN! Seriously, the guy could star in a chewing gum commercial
and have it come out good. :)

And, I suppose he was a believable "older" actor who could convince you he was a young soldier
several decades earlier when it all went bad.

But I'm easy to please. ;)

Hi Russ! Since we're talking to one another here, I thought I'd let you know that we already know each another! I'm Tundrarider over at COW and as you know, your biggest fan of your WG prop replica!

I noticed that you are serious about pursuing Tech 49's leather outfit and accessories. Though I'm done coming up with new costumes, I have to admit that if UD Replicas ever offers a suit, I'll be all over it!

Nice to see you!

Michael

Since there are some Oblivion fans here, I'll show off a Tet logo I did here in my shop. Didn't go any further than this, still kind of waiting on a brainstorm to decide what to do with it. It came about after I considered having Vicka's lapel pin made, but didn't.

It's machined aluminum, about 7" high and 1" thick.

If he thought he was just a regular guy just doing his job, wouldn't he want to know why he had a memory wipe? What was the point of him even knowing about the memory wipe?

I thought Morgan Freeman said there was no Titan exodus at all, that it was a lie. If so why was Jack taking sleepers into space?....or did I miss that part?

If there were thousands of Jacks before him, why was he only 42?

What was the point of living in the Jetson's house in the sky?

Did Jack build his little getaway home? If so, wouldn't he have gone off grid many times before in order to do that? Why was the first girl so surprised when he disappeared off her radar?

Anyway, yeah--ton of plot holes but I will still have to say it was a solid flick. I enjoyed it and it looked beautiful. Everyone keeps comparing it to Moon. Personally I thought Moon was way more predictable than this. Actually did not care for Moon too much, but I really liked Oblivion. I'm not one of those people that always has to say "I figured it all out from the beginning". I like having a mystery to solve, but I do wish the aliens had been explained a little more before it was over. There just wasn't enough of a pay off at the end IMHO.

Memory wipe was probably in case he was captured by the 'aliens' he couldn't give up any secrets besides his daily routines.

He was transporting his team to investigate the alien ship.

There were thousands of clones used for the invasion to wipe out humanity. Then they established the outposts and used the clones for clean up and drone repairs. Two separate groups of clones. Also I think the outpost was number 42, not the clone number.

The 'Jetsons' house was probably to keep them away from the 'aliens' on the surface.

I'm pretty sure he found that house and claimed it, making modifications over time. She may have been freaking out because they were so close to leaving.

So who's going to do a set of rifle furniture so I can make my AR-15 look like his rifle? I could see the typical AR lower sticking out, so we know what it's built on...

It was a Magpul Masada though... You might be interested in this

Now for something completely different (no one expects the Span...err wait): I would like to buy the Best-Buy set, but they only ship domestic U.S. Could anyone buy this for me, and then forward it to me via USPS? It goes without saying that I will transfer all the expenses (and fee you may want to charge hehe) before the transaction. Please send a PM - thanks!

I have been pestering UD replicas since day-one but they are rather busy but the more that call out the greater the chance we may get one.

Nice!

I so want that rifle.... and it will be that or a copy of the green plastic nerf build.

Haunting concept art from Oblivion

I cannot believe they are not publishing an Art of or Concept book - aren't the stunning visuals responsible how well this movie was received?

I just do not understand that decision (and with Art of book I do not mean that tiny booklet from the Target BR set).

I'd really like to see the graphic novel concept make it to print.
Wasn't the development of the novel the source of all the great art?

Just to add my 2 cents; a few things I really like about "Oblivion".

First and foremost, very well produced, great art direction, credible props, great story, and the music score is fantastic.
I really like how you see the TET flying by on the opening Universal logo, and the sound effect of the big "U" as it swings by.
Great use of Led Zep's "Ramble On" while dreaming in his sanctuary; fades out....really great editing.
Speaking of props, the one that caught my eye (and I would like to build a working replica) is the NASA compact nuclear gereator, seen at
57:37 and 1:33:07....don't ask me why!

I didn't mind Tom Cruise being cast in the lead role in this movie; I just wished they would have made him a bit "older" looking, or in other words,
someone that looks like they had been through 5 years of battles with scabs. But then again, maybe clones don't age? Yeah, I get the fact that he was
abducted 60(?) years earlier...but still, just saying.

One other minor issue is that in the first scene where he is in his flying machine, the inside of that ship is simply too antiseptic and new-looking. Again, if he had been fighting scavs and replacing batteries in drones for 5 years, the inside of that ship should have looked more "used", if you know what I mean.

Lastly, I did not care at all for his love-interest Olga Kurylenko...I simply don't find her attractive. For lack of a better substitute, someone along the lines of Jessica Beil, who was very hot in Total Recall and who could definately kick butt.

Over and out.

For lack of a better substitute, someone along the lines of Jessica Beil, who was very hot in Total Recall and who could definately kick butt.

That's interesting, because I thought that they managed to kill all the attractiveness of both Beil and Beckinsale in Total Recall. I found their characters cold, hard-edged (in a bad way) and unsympathetic. They were just mechanical "perfect looking" mannequins in that movie to me.

Certainly Beckinsale was cold and hard-edged, but she was directed to be that way. I found her presence in that movie more for box-office draw than anything else. She's been over-exposed. (But at least she knows how to run around and fire a gun!). Same was true with having Charlize Theron in "Promethius"....simply there for eye candy. However, Jessica Beil did a good job as being the "opposite" of Beckinsale, protecting whats his name. I saw her as the "Laura Croft" type in Total Recall.
Don't expect too much sympathy from characters cast in a furturistic war movie....it's about the action, not the emotion, i.e. "Blade Runner".

But I just threw J. Beil out there as an option....how about Natalie Portman as Cruise's counterpart? I just don't know who the up and coming actresses are.
