Nu Galacita in 1/2500th scale

Nah not even close to too small or detailed, that wouldn't be an issue, but for mass production it would be very time consuming.

This is way beyound awesome .. This is ... hmmmm well beyound awesome...

I'm SOOOOO in for one of these sweeties, if you find a caster.

Although I'm not that fond of the Pegasus, it would look to sweet with the 2 of them together.

OMG Coby she is one amazing ship. I've been waiting to get singed up here. It was driving me crazy watching your work on it and not being able to say anything. I'm stunned ... but not suprised by your work. I'm looking forward to seeing one in person someday, soon :love

I need to make my signiture say, "STL sucks." :)

I work with a laser cutter so the the etched plates are laser cut then there is hand work done to make the raided detail and bevels. The engine cones are sort of done by hand. I used the laser to mark the shapes on some REN shape, but that could have just as easily been taped on with paper.

? I assume you mean parting them into top and bottom halves? That's the plan for part breakdown already. My indecission is about whether I will make it in slices like the hull, or mill out the form in one larger chunk.

Or you cold do a combination of both. build both the top and bottom in slices... slow but effective ;)

as you've demonstrated ;)

Fantastic work Cobywan.

The amount of work and level of detail makes my head spin and my eyes water.

Keep the pix coming please

Thanks. For sure you'll see what I do as I do it.

The thing about slices on the flight pods is that the wall thickness inside the flight deck is only about 1/16" thick. I may actually have to do the the top half in panels and maybe slices for the bottom half.

I really haven't given them much thought since I still have so much to do on the hull. I'm tackling the engine pod cones now.

Hey Cobywan,

I know your laser cutter is at work, but what brand is it? I would like to do some work like this, but have never had anything laser cut like what you are doing.

Also, the panels that are resin, how are you casting such flat sections without air bubbles.

Keep up the great work on this, I am glad to see it resume.

The laser was manufactured by WINC. They don't exist anymore. It's a huge steel gantry model with worm gear and stepper motor motion. The controller was updated 10 years ago and we use AS3000 to generate tool paths. The laser itself is a 40W unit but only about 26W actually comes out of the focusing lens.

The trick with casting anything is to powder your molds. I use babypowder but I think I need to condition the powder by baking it in an oven to drive out any moisture that is absorbes in the bottle. The powder on the mold surface makes the resin wick into the fine details and prevents medium sized bubbles. It doesn't fix any bubbles caused by moisture contamination your resin or any bubbles that you mix into your resin before pouring.
