not really a prop, but a lot of sculpting...

....I guess the prototype looked better than the final product... at least from the pictures I'd seen a while ago. What impressed me most is that you've managed to make it look right just with a paint job, no sculpting at all. :eek

I've just got a SS John Doggett from the X-Files. The sculpt is fine, at least it looks a bit more like the actor than the Mulder one. And speaking of the Mulder figure, just like the Aragorn, what bothers me most about it is the eyes. They look awfully wrong. It'd need more than just a repaint, unlike the Doggett one.

(I've been looking at pics of the Mulder figure and y'know what... the sculpt isnt that bad. a repaint would make it tons better. (virtually) all things can be fixed with a repaint, lol

yeah, the Aragorn prototype looked amazing. Then they gave us the production version with the thick rubber looking coat, un-worn clothes and just bad paintjob on the face. At least I think I've managed to get back some of what they showed us in the prototype :) (pics are prototpe on the left... mine on the right. Followed by what everyone got :rolleyes )

I think yours actually looks better than the prototype. BTW I think your ObiWan is amazing. It has a good cross between Ewan and Alec in it and is very lifelike. I used to do portraits and I found that the difference between a good one and a bad was the kind and amounts of color used. Your experiance with oil painting I am sure helps you with getting the right tones and blends. Even if an unexperienced person can not see the detail differences themself they can see it subconciously.

The Aragorn prototype kinda looks like Ed Harris with a wig to me. I really prefer your version right down to the chin divot (which the prototype didn't even have.)

omg it DOES look like Ed Harris doesnt it. I've never seen that before.... and it's all I can see looking at those pics now, lol

The chin dimple was there on the sculpt, they just didnt paint it to stand out. The sculptors must go mad when they do good sculpts which are just ruined by bad production paint jobs and costumes... I know I would.

Oh... and thanks guys.. again :)

Darren

I must say... with the supreme repaint... I almost think the chunky hair is ruining the effect... do you plan on leaving it as-is, or possibly re-do it to your high customizing standards?

Oh and I totally agree that your custom job looks better than the prototype - well done. :cheers

Nah I'm happy with the hair as it is. It isn't identical to Viggo's hair in the film, but then you're just not going to get that at this scale. When it's up on the shelf on display and you're looking at it, the hair looks perfect. Oh and thanks for the comments :$

I just did a comparison on the Anakin head of the before, after, and what was resculpted, like I did with the Obi-Wan for some friends. Just thought I'd post it here too

CHANGES

Oh I'm absolutely dying to get that piece and the first thing I'd do would be to resculpt/repaint the face. But y'know...... money... and stuff :lol

maybe one day.............

everything's off my budget at the moment. Just had to cancel the Jabba set up. we're trying to do the whole 'cut down our outgoings and bring more money in' thing. So expensive toys like Jabba, ed-209 and power loaders are out at the mo... and boy does it hurt, lol. There is WAY too much cool stuff out at the moment.

So i'm just getting myself as busy as I can doing repaints, resculpts customs... etc to bring money in.. sort our bills and debts out.... become rich... and then buy EVERYTHING i want... EVERYTHINGGGGG

:lol

wow, y'know i totally forgot I had this thread in here. I've been coming to this forum for ages now...but forgot to show any of the other sculpts I'd done.

ok, this first one is Arnold from Terminator 2. I never bought the Sideshow figure, but I got the head in a trade with someone for one of my Anakin heads..... so... y'know... I thought I'd have a tinker. (I put together the body/outfit myself, I didn't think the Sideshow version looks like Arnie's physique/clothing at all)

I didn't think that this.....

looked like this....

Basically the face was pretty damn great to start with (Andy Bergholtz deserves praise for this, it's a great sculpt), but there were a few things for me that weren't perfect. (not that I expect action figures to be perfect... but when i'm resculpting something for my display shelves... then perfect is what I aim for)

Everything under the chin and ears was a disaster. The neck was all wrong... skinny... a weird shape, and made him look like he had a tiny chin and a huge forehead, the were ears too flat, I thought the frown lines were too prominent, and i wanted more of a downturned mouth at the corners, which was always how I thought of Arnie as the terminator. The main thing though was that his head needed angling upwards (to make his jaw more prominent) and his neck needed making more 'arnie shaped'

I've done a full (long!) write up on my blog of what I changed and how I did it, with a ton of photos. www.darrencarnall.com

Anyway, here's a few pics.

superb job! the Arnie features are excactly there. I'm planing on making a deckard head for my android hunter doll (...in the near future ;) )

nice one!

by the way, what kind of clay do you use to sculpt your heads?
