Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

I don't know what's going on in that shot of the landed Nostromo. For one, it's from earlier in the film, where Dallas orders "kick in the floods"... so that's way before they've decided to go out for a walk. Point being I'd doubt they'd have lowered the airlock lift by that point.

I suspect that "lift shaft" you're seeing in the pic, is actually something else, such as the stand for a studio light that is directly behind the miniature.

The structure of the "lift" from the airlock is fairly obscure. It SEEMS to be some sort of "leg" that comes down from the ship to the ground, but if you look at it in the live action shots, the platform is supported from below, and doesn't seem to be attached to the leg!

But take another look at that landed shot... isn't that the NOSE of the ship pointed to the LEFT? The Nostromo has ONE gear in front and TWO to the rear. So why do we see TWO gear in front?

The only way it makes sense is if the ship is really angled towards the camera, with the gear positioned as noted...

Another thing I noticed is that we obviously are seeing the front strut in relation to the Observation window Ash uses. In walking scenes, we see 2 landing struts in the shot. I measured my landing strut locations on my Nostromo model and from the front strut, the rear struts would be 390 feet equidistant, so actually the struts are really too close together in the full size mock-ups....but it looks cool :cool:cool

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

:cool Overlay of a 3d CGI model. Model wasn't created by me...ignore the fact the intakes / exhausts aren't quite at the correct angle.

Yeah there we go. :cool

I don't think that vertical tube corresponds to anything.. it looks like it's outboard of the landing strut in any case. Probably just a lighting stand or other piece of equipment.

A similarly "WTF" addon :lol are those landing floods... they look like studio lights that were bolted to the miniature at the last minute!

That is what they look like.. I actually built them for my ship. I have not attached them yet. They actually have little gravel guard screens over them, Mine are retracting out of the rear of the hull on each side of both smaller maneuvering engines on the bottom. That by the way phase pistol is an excellent sceen capture you did...

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

I also wanted to do the fiber optic lights across the bottom, but then I realized a few weeks back they were actually long strings of lights hanging across the bottom... I would have no Idea where to get those...:wacko:wacko:wacko

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

OK, this clears something else up... I have the Narcissus located on the correct side on my model, but its called Port side, not starboard. I guess I was literally thinking of it the way the ocean liners I used to see docked.. I guess they dont all dock the way that it sounds Thanks for clearing that up as well Phase Pistol.

Well you'd have to drill a lot of pinholes in rows, and back them up with optical fibers... pipe in the light that way I guess.

Well "port" is to the left and "starboard" to the right, when you stand on a ship facing forward... I assume it's the same on Nostromo.

When we see Kane's corpse ejected, it flies down that channel towards the rear of the ship... we don't know for sure though if that's Narcissus, or the sister shuttle on the other side, though, do we?

That would also be on the same side as the picture I posted..Notice to the left of the shuttle the angled/sloped Hull, and to the right the inside vertical wall of the Engine Nacelle..

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Just a quick plug for the kits.. A guy just got one delivered to him yesterday, here is a partial reply to the kit and him possibly doing a photo etch version maybe in the future.

"Yes! I did receive it. It's beautiful! I used to make photo-etched brass and stainless for my model cars. I'll keep it in mind about the new master mold. **************************************************. Thanks for the GREAT model. All the parts are in good shape. It's a work of art!"

Im getting the parts molding down to a science now, so Im getting some happy feedback!

That's cool. Great work! Tell him to update us with pics when the model is complete.

What's going on?

Phase - brilliant pic and article - thanks very much for posting and to Brandon and co for doing this - great read!

Re: This thread closed.

Thanks.

What is the deal with jtparker changing the thread title, and "signing off"? Anybody have a clue?
