Nostromo research

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

I would call it the "SNARK"... It was the Nostromo first name... and I also like the reference to Lewis Caroll's tale...
:)

PS : jtparker, Phil Rae talks about the second shuttle in one of his posts on the link you've previously provided (but don't remember on which page, sorry).

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Ok, About this second shuttle,I will go ahead and cast the hangar with shuttle, and since the other side of the wing is symmetrical, It can be added there as well, I guess we can assume it will be like the Narcissus. The name, even if we could get a name from any source who worked on this movie, , that would be cool!

Ps, Space Jockey, I hope you got over your heart attack from the April fools joke your better half pulled:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Weeeell, I did a quick search of Joseph Conrad books on Wiki, and so far for names of the other shuttle if we go that route there is the 'Almayer', the 'Otago', and the 'Torrens'. Also the 'Jeddah', the 'Patna' (wasn't that the name of the ship that Bishop 2 travelled on in Alien 3?). There's probably others. :cool

My vote is for the Torrens. Yes, Patna was the Sulaco-class ship in A3.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Didn't the name Starcub come from the Aliens Colonial Marine Technical Manual? I seem to recall the Narcissus being referred to as a 'Lockmart Starcub' vessel.

I wonder if the name Starcub is a reference to Alien's working title "Star Beast"?

Not sure of that, sounds a bit fannish to me somehow. Lockmart rings a bell; was that the name of the builder of one of the Snark variants in Color Vision?

(Haven't got my copy handy. Love that book, where's Color Vision 2, 3 and 4, dammit??)

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Might be worth looking at some Greek Mythology names too, some of those are pretty good.

It breaks the theme, though. "Narcissus" is a Conradian name, it's from "The N-Word of the Narcissus", ahem. :confused

If the name first appeared in fan-generated content such as the Technical Manual that might not be surprising!

Still haven't got Colorvision. Seems to go for pretty high prices at the moment.

Could be that the names are intended to sound aeronautical, with Lockmart a corruption of Lockheed and Cub referring to the Piper Cub.

All guesses of course! Back on topic, I totally agree with adding a second shuttle bay and maintaining the Nostromo's symmetry.

I said it so you could nitpick it. :)

Mebbe. Lockmart was probably meant to sound like a combo of Lockheed and Martin. However "Lockheed" is used in the development art, I pulled my copy of CV out - seems I was thinking of the Lockheed CM88B "Bison" transporter. For my money, that means Lockheed takes precedence as a 'closer to canon' manufacturer.

Yeah, I'm pleased the guys are going with two shuttles too. Now...next question...is Narcissus the port or starboard ship? Ha ha, let the controversy begin...

Not at all; 'Narcissus' originated from Greek Mythology - Conrad chose it for his book. There are plenty of Greek mythological names that sound similar and just as cool. :cool

Yes yes, I know my Greek mythology, don't worry. But its Conradian element takes precedence, thanks to 'Nostromo' and 'Patna' and 'Sulaco'...

Superb thread.
It just keeps getting more and more interesting.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Let's talk about Ash's blister again for a moment... Here is a screencap, hope it'll help locate its exact position on the ship underbelly...
