Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

The book you're talking about is the ALIEN MOVIE NOVEL, published by Futura publications limited. Bought mine in 1979 !
:)

Other great ALIEN ref books include Ron Cobb's COLORVISION and, of course, THE BOOK OF ALIEN...

Those 3 regularly pop-up on eBay at rather affordable prices...

Regarding the ID number on the engine of the Nostromo, it's the same ID as seen on the crew patches : 180286

Well spotted, the little antenna is missing on the final model... This to say I'm more and more considering turning my Halcyon model into this variant version...

Wow, that center book is exactly the one I had, I dont remember what ever happened to it, its been 29 years, I'll bet that there must be second hand copies of this floating around somewhere. That book was my favorite!

Let me know if you need any scans from it.

It was one of my favorites, too... We're talking about an era were there was no VCR and no DVD, so this book was truely a goldmine !!! (the same publisher released another one, very similar, devoted to OUTLAND)

Fred

PS : Last time I saw this ALIEN MOVIE NOVEL for sale on eBay, the asked price was around 20 bucks...

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

I actually started the shuttle tonight, It is rather tiny, so what I am doing is shaping it in little sections into the wedge shape peeking out of the hangar on the Nostromo, The shuttle basically started out as a little square, now I am in the process of shaping it here.....

So for anyone who wondered where the shuttle was actually located on the Nostromo,
.here it is...

WELL DONE, jtparker !!!

I just have one question : Did you compare this Narcissus size to the cockpit windows in order to get the same scale ??? (since we can determine the size of the characters from the windows, they're also part of the sets, know what I mean ?)

Nice work. Not only that...there was another one on the other side, so you could build that in too and still be canonical! Of course the canon status of this could probably be debated, but then again none of the filming models actually had a hangar bay to the best of my knowledge.

Still, the shuttles were numbered, and Martin Bower, Bill Pearson and Phil Rae have all said there were supposed to be two. (One was out of commission for whatever technical reason).

Cheers,
Martyn

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

That's strange because I was about to talk about this !
(I was talking about the 2 shuttles thing with Phase Pistol on another board and decided it was worth mentioning it here)

This to say I agree with Nwerke... Go on jtparker, add another shuttle to your Nostromo model !
:love

I'll get it shown on the blueprints, too. :thumbsup

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

2 shuttles on the Nostromo??

This does not make sense.... For one thing, Lambert, Ripley, Parker and Ash had to press on with the hunt for the Alien after Bretts death.. (Before Ash went nuts) Lambert broke down and said "I say we just take our chances and get the hell off of here , we take our chances and hope somebody picks us up" Ripley replied "Lambert, the shuttle wont take four"...lambert: "Then why dont we draw straws or something"
Parker "Im not drawing any go* Da*m straws, we are killing this thing right now."

So it is not Possible there could have been another shuttle, because the entire crew could have simply evacuated on two shuttles. if they wished. make sense?

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Could be a docked shuttle. Just non-functional for whatever reason.

If this can be confirmed, I can easily add the second shuttle hangar in the same place on the other side.. if this is where it was hypothetically . does anyone know here where it might have been???
or would it have been in a symmetrical hangar just mirrored on bottom of the other "wing"? :confused :confused :confused

Is this shuttle a starcub shuttle just like the Narcissus? Is that the meaning of the "E" with the number on the top of the Narcissus?

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

I can't remember if it's an earlier script or in the novelization but the second shuttle was damaged so they only had the one.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

I don't know whether they filmed the scene where it was mentioned or if it was an earlier version of the script, but Narcissus is numbered E (for Escape) 1. Why number it if there wasn't an E2 as well, or have an Escape ship that can't take the entire crew? As I say, the three most fan-accessible modellers on the show have all confirmed this anyway, so I just take it as canon, personally.

Edits:

PS, I don't know if it ever got the name "Starcub", but yeah, it would have been the same model of ship. E for escape as mentioned above. If you look through Color Vision or the Book of Alien, I believe the other versions of the escape ship are also numbered, giving a clue that this was a feature of the script from early on. Yes, location was to have been the same as Narcissus, just mirrored on the other wing. Would have been interesting to know if the other ship was ever named, and if so, was it a Conradian reference?

PPS loving the new dollhouse theme. Long overdue. One thing I've always said, RPF could definitely use more dollhouse people and miniaturists - they'll just fit right in.

PPPS someone tell my LHS that it's only funny on April 1, would you? They actually DID go this way a few years ago. :(

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Didn't the name Starcub come from the Aliens Colonial Marine Technical Manual? I seem to recall the Narcissus being referred to as a 'Lockmart Starcub' vessel. If we do decide to show the extra shuttle it would be cool to come up with a Joseph Conrad inspired name for it...
