Nostromo research

New Lower thruster mod

Here is a pic of the new bottom front Thruter Mod I have created, It needs the plumbing installed still, but its almost done, and will include 3 small engine nozzles that are glued on...it will be molded in the same PVC resin

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Here is the final result of the pre-mold part, the lower thruster housing on the forward bottom of the Nostromo. It was never included on the Original 80's Kit, and there is a curious blank spot on the Bottom of the hull, and none of the Molds I have have this part, So my guess it was never completed before they made 12 of them, and that was all they made. Here is My completed part ready to be molded, made from vinyl, and Plasticene. This will complete the kit nicely...

Here is an unfinished Hull I am working on with some primer thrown on and the Mod in place to give a general sense of how this is situated on the hull//

Man your hard work is really paying off , That looks great!!:thumbsup

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Thanks Daytona! ...a very important part of the kit! maybe I should make a little shuttle garage on the bottom wing LOL!!!

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

You continue to impress!!! And that is some great mod work to be extra proud of.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

The first casting was sent to Matt Meyer Studios for building. This will be very exciting cos I know this guy can do wonders with this ship, and judging by his work, he is an expert, and his will be way better than anything I can do! He will be posting pics soon on this site, and you will be able to see a true master at work!

What an awesome thread! It's great to see your progress and the ship is turning out beautifully!
I especially love this place as you can post a few pics and questions and several posts later, you have the history all figured out! These molds are a great find. I'm glad to see this ship coming to life and perhaps being kitted out as well!

Thanks vaderman!

I am actually in the process of re-casting some of the parts. I had some advice from and expert, and Recasting some of these 25 year old Molds is going to make a much cleaner Model. Today I laser printed a high-quality reference book, Spiral bound glossy close up pictures that will be included in this kit.

The molds I am re-tooling with very expensive Silicon to clean up parts so they are cleaner

WOW!! your upgrade to the kit is really something else.:thumbsup

Daytona,

The Forward antenna and little radar dish was never on the AEF model, and this I intend to create and cast Myself. AEF figured I guess this kit is so involved, this is more for a serious model builder who is going to add mega detail and maybe make these parts from scratch. But actually I am on my second new Mold, I am adding some extra detail to the main engine nacelles,
, But not too much because a builder will have his own vision of how to really detail it out.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Hey jtparker,

I did'nt know that i guess it was just a basic shape kit when it first came out.

Hey jtparker,

Yeah, the ship has panel lines, little vents, little hatches and stuff molded in already, even all the landing gears and doors.
I am using very cheap Vinyl vertical blinds for details Im adding on. Its thin and cuttable with sissors. Here you can see I have sprayed a section of my hull with a can of 99 cent primer from the dollar store to see how the level of detail is...I just copied details from studio close-ups of the ship. Here is what I have so far...

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Here is a pic of a part after sitting in purple silicon mold compound for 18 hours. The retooled part is in a mold using 21st century technology, not the old latex molds used 25 years ago.. This Model is going to get all new modern molds, but I will keep the level of detail relatively the same to keep it original!

The extra detail work you have done really makes a big inprovement.:thumbsup

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Tonight I have a 15 minute window between pouring parts and detailing my own ship, here you can see the top of the hull I started to detail out. This is done by cutting random width strips of the vinyl stock and then cutting at random lengths. then I open up the hull pics in the book, make spots of super glue in the areas that get the details, about 4 or five at a time, and plop down the little squares.

A panel can range in size from 3 millimeters to maybe 15 millimeters. then when I think the hull looks decent, I spray it with a wet, but light coat of cheap primer to see the results. This will of course be painted with a lighter gray later, and maybe it seems odd to many modelers doing it in sections the way I am showing here, but for me personally It makes it easier to keep consistent detail on the ship.
The final coat of lighter gray will soften the stark hull details where they will be smoother, but still break up the visual effect and make a nice "busy" starship.
Cutting the vinyls strips, doing the entire top of the hull and primer took only 15 minutes.

Again outstanding work!! :thumbsup I know what you mean about do it in sections i do the samething with the larger kits i work on.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Thanks spaceace.

Today I got a chance to work on it a little bit...got the wing detailed out, and the center portion of the starboard engine nacelle on. Here is a pic of the wing, and then the assembly I have gotten together thus far. The ship is pictured on 12"X12" floor tiles, and I dont have the thrusters on the outboard engine nacelles attached, or the flaps on the thrusters, or the front crew cabin and antennas, so it will be over 2 feet long easy when fully assembled....
