Nostromo research

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Let's talk about Ash's blister again for a moment... Here is a screencap, hope it'll help locate its exact position on the ship underbelly...

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Here is another kit going out, this time with yet more molds I had to redo after the old ones started giving me headaches.. I do one mold at a time with new expensive silicon as they show wear... beats doing all of the molds at once !!!l

Dennis Lowe has uploaded a couple of more pics on his site if they're of any use for you detailing work, JTParker. Great stuff. :cool

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

I think I about have the starboard Engine Nacelle done, I have a few lines to etch, and a little tidying up around the front intake that I modified. Phase Pistols actually provided much of the reference pics for this. The model is starting to look like the Nostromo with all the flaps and things going onto the engines, Its measuring over 2 feet now :cool

Looks terrific JTParker! Nice one! :)

Thanks Space Jockey! Here is an almost finished starboard side using Yours, Freds, and Phase's Reference Pics! : Just a little bit left to finish here...

sequence of storyboards (reprinted in Fantastic Films no 9) shows the airlock in relation to the underside of Nostromo.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Here's a slightly clearer copy of the "under construction" shot showing the leg with the blister in the background:
nostromo_leg_blister_mike.jpg

Incidentally, it looks as if each of the large pistons is numbered - there's another photo earlier in the thread that shows a '2' on one of them (I assume the one that's bleached out on the left of this picture). Interesting that Phase Pistol's storyboard also shows a '3' on one of the legs.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Great pic, Jar! :cool

I was thinking that the three landing gear placements are numbered... so the forward gear would be 1, and the rear would be two and three...

I think on the set they had the one lifesized gear, and then a cardboard cutout to indicate a second gear? The storyboard gives a tantalizing hint that the scene is taking place towards the rear of the ship, I think...

I had thought the same thing, but I began to wonder. The bottom right corner of the bleached marking in the image above looks more like part of a "2" than a "3" - assuming it's part of a number at all.

The other image I referred to showing the "2" was this one, which definitely doesn't look like a cardboard cut-out. Of course it could have been repainted between shots to represent a different leg. Could that be a "1" on the left?

I think you're right. It's very hard to be sure as, to my eye both the storyboard and the shot with second (cardboard) leg in the background make the legs look much closer together than they appear from any angle on the model.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

One possibility is that the four struts of the gear are painted "1", "2", "3" and "4".

Another possibility is that the two struts on one side are painted "3", and the other two are painted "2", so that by turning the set piece, it looks like two different gear assemblies.

The "3" number appears to be associated with yellow stripes, I'd be curious to know if all four tubes have yellow stripes, or if they're yellow on one side and something else on the other. The "2" looks like it's on a red background, but it's hard to be sure (red yellow blue for the three gear assemblies, just like for the three spacesuits...?)

Interesting idea!

I think if you look through the gap between the two front tubes in the "under construction" picture (to the left of the "3") you can see one of the others in the background with a matching yellow stripe.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

A couple of screenshots... ....several questions answered. Note the lift hydraulics next to the undercarriage leg.
Though having the airlock and lift miles away from the infirmary seems somewhat strange to me... plus it clashes with machinery etc for the air intakes and exhausts... ...but it is what it is. :cool

Second shot shows a view from Ash's observation lister when the three crewmembers return.... put it on slow-motion and look at the part I've highlighted. I reckon it's a light from someone's helmet. Doesn't seem like a reflection.
