3 thumbs up for you cool project!!!it came out very nice!!!im getting wet hands like when i remind the final scenes in the movie!!!!

Thanks as always for the comments and information Fred.
Do you have any thoughts on how to resolve the non fitting hatch, or should I just leave it?

Nice to see someone dig in on a prop like this.

Looking good, sir!

Thank you Phil !

I think you should leave it as it is (if you're looking to achieve something screen-accurate)... I have made some homework this morning and I can confirm that two different boxes were used, one for main photography with Sigourney and another one for the close-ups.

If you look at these screencaps you'll see that the dimensions of the hatch perfectly fit the smaller box. Then I suppose when it was time to put the hydraulics, keypad and bolts inside for close-ups the SFX crew realized that the initial box was way too small and decided to increase its size. Since the hatch was only supposed to appear opened in the scenes featuring the hydraulics and bolts there was no problem to change the size of the box I suppose... and nobody seem to have noticed this before you started this incredibly cool replica !

As for the hatch itself, as you certainly already know, it came from the main airlock set (this info was found on propsummit, where it was initially shared months ago) :

Et voilà !

Thanks again Fred for your input and the time you've taken to help me out with this project!.
Thankfully we are of the same opinion and I shall therefore leave it as it is.

* Forgot to mention that when I was working on the box on Sunday I actually fell out of it backwards and it felt like I'd broken my arn (didn't drop the expensive drill I was holding though)
- dangerous hobby prop making!!

Again you're very welcome Phil, always glad to help when it comes to the first A L I E N !

(Damn, bad news regarding your arm ! By a strange coincidence I almost broke my back this WE just by lifting my 4 years old daughter... growing old sucks)
Anyhow, take care of that arm !

Fred

Earlier in the thread potential 'in jokes' on the buttons and panels were mentioned. If you look at the top right button of the middle panel, it says 'Agaric Fly'.

The Fly Agaric is a brightly coloured and pretty well known mushroom. My guess is it is a joke referral to the mushroom cloud of a nuclear blast :)

Hello again, very cool project. When I posted those first HD screencaps, they were from an old D-Theatre copy of the film as the BluRay set haden't yet been released. I had forgotten about this, but I have the BluRay set now and thought i'd come back to provide you with some 1080p screencaps. I don't know how they made the 'DANGER' panel, but you can definitely tell that the words appear to be colored in with a felt tip pen. You can also see that the light bar along the bottom of the interior lid has a divider in the middle instead of being one long bar.

Sorry it's been a while, but I've been distracted by a few other projects I have on the go!

Thanks for the Bump Skin Job 66, Joberg and Leigh. It's just what I needed!

Dynofiend, the mushroom could be the explosion but I think it's just as likely referring to hallucinogenic magic mushrooms.

Grey thanks for producing these great images from the Blue Ray. I've watched this sequence so many times and yet I still hadn't noticed the dividing bar on the lower light strip.
You can't imagine getting away with using a felt tip today! Graphic production 35 years ago was a much more labour intensive and the means of production a lot more limited. It's so easy today - design, print and if you don't like it make a quick change and print it

I have done a little bit lately which involved working out the nuts and bolts on the component I call the base plate.

I think its pretty close but I welcome your comments.
I just need to make the small dividing walls in the circular trench and it’ll be ready for moulding.

Quick distraction, I've recently acquired some Art Department drawing from the first two films.
The most relevant one here is the studio layout for the main Alien set.
I've seen the drawing before but it's always been on paper. Mine in also a Dyeline print but it's on draughting film.
There's a 'fogged' section next to the title block where it's been exposed to light, but other than that it's in remarkably good condition for its age.
I've had it scanned and I'm now in the process of cleaning it up in Photoshop.

Look at the date - 36 years ago!

That's all I've got for now, so I'd better get back to the day job of making models!

Hey Phil, it's great to hear form you !!!

Great update, even if it's a small one, and that original Bridge Blueprint is awesome, thanks a lot for sharing it here !
Of course I can't wait for the next update now...

:cool

Talk soon !
Fred

PS : Grey, those screencaps blew my mind... new info to spot here and there in them I can already guess...

Yes Phil is back and that project also...good to see you again and seeing that blueprint of the interior of the Nostromo dated from 1978 brings back all kinds of memories; TFS with us Phil:cool

I am continually amazed by the varied and interesting props that people make, got to say, this has gone onto my "Never knew i wanted one, until somebody built it" list :)

Looking forward to the updates.
