Noah's Ark

Greetings Calebxy!

From what I can gather here, I'm reasonably confident you and I have the same beliefs. And I think that's just awesome.

THIS is precisely why religious discussions are forbidden here. . . . .

With all due respect, nobody cares about your beliefs, or mine, or my next door neighbor's, or my veterinarian's or my car mechanic's--nor SHOULD they. This is a prop-building forum, not a church. So stick to prop-building.

Thanks.

If it's bugging you (understandably so) just leave it be, I'm sure the mods will sort it out if there's an issue with this thread.

Well, your comments here have already made your beliefs quite plain. I'm not going to reply to those posts, as you are completely correct that it's not an appropriate forum for that sort of thing. I'm encouraging Calebxy to discuss this as a model based mainly on source text and to leave the theology out of it. Think of it as a modeler trying to build the Nautilus only as it's described in the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea rather than drawing from the Disney movie version... that would be a valid modeling project and so is this.

Yup, this is what mods are for... and from what I can tell from my time on this board, they do a fine job of it.

Back to the model design itself: Calebxy, I would only point out that some sort of wicker cage structure arround just the bird compartment would be enough. You wouldn't need to so treat every window on the thing.

Have fun, everyone! Build some models!

--Alex

P.S. --Calebxy, if for some reason this thread does close, hit me up by e-mail, albertese@gmail.com. I'd love to this project progress!

Caleb and I had intended to start the actual 1:100 model today but it turns out that it will be 1.33m long, and we didn't have enough materials for that. We ended up working at 1:250 scale, which conveniently resulted in 1mm equalling 1ft

The entire thing is made from balsa wood and matchsticks, here Caleb is placing matchsticks along the edge of the roof to create the 'windows'

I think I was whistling in that photo???

My very crude layout of the lowest floor. each cubicle is 20ft squared, and there are 52 of them. We intended them to have half height doors but the scale didn't allow it really

Caleb worked tirelessly on this monotonous task of window making

tumblr_myoye9CwCu1sf4tb1o6_1280.jpg

You might be able to see that each large hole has a ramp leading down from level 2 to 1. These openings would be about 30ft squared so they're pretty colossal. Big enough to fit any animals you want down there

Showing the window effect

This displays the general level layout quite roughly. We decided that the largest animals would live on the lowest level, with smaller animals on level 2 and humans (and food storage) on level 3

And here's the team! Caleb, my youngest brother Henry, my sister Amy and me

As you can see, we didn't manage to finish it so next time we meet up we'll try to get it done, put it in a diorama too perhaps

Oh it seems to have double posted...?? not sure how to fix that :(

edit; I've just deleted all the photos from this post

Thanks for uploading these! :D And, of course, thank you very much for all your help. I'd never really done anything like this before, and it was immensely fun. Hopefully we can meet up again soon and get it finished completely.

Funny how most pictures show the ark looking all artistic, yet it was probably just a long box like boat.....that worked. Good stuff, love the project.

That really is cool. That's a clever approach to modeling the windows. Are you still planning to make little animals? Also, will your's have a removable or missing wall to keep the interior visible? It'd be a shame to cover all that work up...

Also, I seem to have missed the tar question earlier... I'm sure the tarring would only have been needed on the "box" of it, but not on the inner structures like decks and ramps and walls, et cetera... see what I mean?

As I said before, I wanna dig out the model I started and finally finish it up. As I recall, mine worked out to 60 cm... how long did your's end up as?

We're not doing any animals for this model, it's far too small. We're considering the 1:250 to be a prototype for the 1:100 version. Yeah we are intending to have one side and the roof to be detachable; the dimensions of the model are 455mm x 75mm x 45mm

I've now bought the wood for the big ark! It's not quite enough for all of it, but it's certainly enough to get me started. Since it's easier and more convenient to make the ark as long as the length of the pieces, it won't be quite as long as I was originally intending. But that's ok. It will still be a decent size. I also need to buy a particular type of glue, and then I can get started.

Check out hobby lobby if you have one by you, near the model section. Theres a company that makes small miniature figures including animals. See if they would be in or near scale of the ark.

I really like how the windows turned out and the inventive way you used matchsticks to make them uniform. I also agree with your idea for the larger model that will depict the animals as well to put the larger species on the lowest level. As that is sound nautical thinking to keep the ark from being top heavy and thus less stable by keeping the most weight at the bottom.

As another suggested model railroad animals might work HO is 1/87 and N scale is 1/160

Cool! I look forward to seeing this go! I've gotten my own Ark model going again, too. I'm building mine of plastic and it's about two feet long.

I was perusing the model railroad store I buy my plastic at and admiring the HO scale figures... I briefly considered building to that scale for the readily available figures... but that would make the Ark a touch over five feet long... so...

Caleb..??? Bought...something...no...impossible....?!??!!?
Hahaa I'm joking, I can order some HO scale figures for you if you want, they're about £4 for 100

Well, actually, it was Mum's money...

Anyway, are those the figures you showed me at your house? Because if so, they're not quite the right scale, as the ark is going to be slightly smaller than what we worked out.

Also, can you buy that glue we were using at B&Q?

Where do you find 100 HO scale figures for 4GBP? That is absurdly inexpensive compared to what they're priced in my part of the world...

You can but it will be 4x more expensive. I can pick up several tubes for you at poundland if you need any

I found them on amazon, here ya go buddy! They're not very detailed (obviously) but they're pretty nice for 4 squid quid

Nice job!

Actually, the wide variety of animals on the earth can all be traced back to 'root parents.' For instance, every variety of dog on the planet can be placed back to three main breeds. So, there may have only been a few dogs on the ark, with the last few thousand years of cross specie breeding that has resulted in the variety we have today.
