Was thinking it could also relieve some of the tension on the toe sole too that happens in the straight gluing method.

Thoughts?

The steam method simply changes the shape from a boot to a slimmer toe. Because the new profile is lower then the boot, there is extra fabric. I did get both some muffin top and some wrinkles on my wear pair, but it does not look bad. The wrinkles occur because the steam heats and rubberized material under the fabric and like a "shrinky" in the oven, it warps first. Apply enough heat, and I am sure (if you don't cook the toe if the shoe first) that this rubber would eventually shrink in size.

I would suggest that a bit of both the steam and cut method is going to get the best result. To date, I have never done the cut and glue method, just the steam method.

Do not use his inverters they Buzz so loud

Buzzing inverters? Where we're going, we don't buzzing inverters.

The future is "light paper"

Thanks cavx. I think I will give them both at the same time a shot! I'll let you know if I ruin my wearing pair or not haha.

I'd start with the steam method and if you are not 100% happy with the finish, then cut the excess.

New Look Heel Cup Part II

"It is all about that bass, about that bass, no treble" and so tonight I had a bit of play with the spare parts I acquired.

The goal is to create a larger part from the original that can be glued over the top of the original (after you clip the wings off?). I will also be making a deeper bubble for the LED bubble.

As you can see, it creates the look closer to the bulging Heel Cup of the RD MAG. It also helps change the look of the standard V2 due to their MP MAG heritage where the mid-sole is too thick.

All I have really with these so far is to clean up the glue line, trim and blend the bottom edges to give the 'extended' look I was chasing. I also gave these a quick coat of light grey. I need to source a set of the MP MAG letters (he is selling a decal kit right now?) to increase the size of the letters so that once molded and cast, will look closer to the real part.

As you can also see, that paint I used doesn't really last after some hard wear (this past weekend was SuperNova) which is quite disappointing. Perfect for display pairs though.

If it helps anyone, elwirecrafts cuttable el sheets are not usable for these replicas. All their other products are great but the cuttable sheet is not usable for a replica mag.

They have a massive half cm white border around the edges before the lighted area, and are useless as they will not fit in the soles or strap.

If they are cuttable, apart from the terminals, don't you cut the white boarder off? Is it possible to fold the white part under for the soles?

No, you can't cut the border off, you are stuck with it. They are only good for other uses, not for these Mags where space is minimal.

They are also presoldered and i found the connections weak. It was basically a wasted A5 sheet. The best EL sheets are one where there is minimal space between the edges.

Which inverter you talking about?

I think maybe that website link Jedifyfe posted up, or maybe some other one?!

To be honest, all El inverters make noise, and i hardly doubt anyone can notice it, as you aren't exactly going to stick your ears to your shoes when they are on your feet!

Well had a go at sliming the front got one done not the best of jobs but looks loads better then the original look. I'll say this it was not an easy thing to do. I'll prob do a lot better on the other one cause now I know what to expect but this was not fun to say the least. Ps any one know a good way to get ride of glue spots from loctite.

You talk about the VHT dye paint, right?
Maybe with a matt varnish it can last...

Yes and not really because it is vinyl dye, not rubber dye. I painted the sleeves of my 2015 jacket in a darker version with not a hint of peel or cracking because that is what the paint was made for.

The thick midsole on the back of the V2s is actually more screen accurate. They're a little thicker than the movie, but the 2011s are thinner than the movie version.

I don't have a picture on hand, last night I popped the rim of the base of the heel cup out and laid it over the top if the back of the heel. I then trimmed the edges round and glued in place.

The result is two fold where 1 it shortens the look if that blocky heel, and 2, it makes the upper sit up straight and not lean forward like the standard V2 does.

The process was really taxing on my paint work, so I will need to repaint before I post an image.

Can some one post a pic of the back of the cup want to make a template for the HC cups and use foam to cut them out

Are you after the template for the heel cup or the letters?

Hopefully this tells a better story of what I did. Sorry for the ugly state of my shoes, but if anyone wants to tackle this mod, know that is best done before you paint. The bond between Mid-Sole and Heel Cup seems to be strong which was a concern to me last night when the heel came away from the mid-sole. I guess this is no different to the toe slim method where you cut the front of the shoe open and glue it back down.

The letters need to be replaced with larger versions now. I have a vector file for the NIKE and MAG logos and will have to test out that new CNC cutter I bought my wife. I'll probably cut them from plastic, make a mold and cast them is clear elastomer so they are made from rubber and bend to the shape as I glue them on. I may even be able to tint them aqua during the pour.

Any getting ahead of myself and so I am off to repaint my shoes :)

And YES that sole on the new shoe on the left is one of the new casts I have done.
