Nike Mag V2 Mod Discussion (Page 58 Shopping List)

Agreed. there's absolutely nothing to like about these at all!

I'm 90% sure that Nike will not release the MAGs this year (that 10% is mostly hope from my inner child) they do keep teasing with 'Mcfly' themed releases like the SB Dunk and the Janoski Max, both of which look pretty sick.....but I feel its more just for them to rake in a little extra cash than as a build up to the actual release.

Like others have said, the whole 'power laces' thing is a cool but ultimately unobtainable concept at this time. Certainly is not a viable feature for an actual wearable shoe.

Basically guys......keep on modding! :D

And here is some inspiration :)

Just checking in to make sure people don't start expecting Nike to release Mags, again. Seems like Brad's got things pretty well locked down in that regard.

Good job, Brad. Glad I don't have to be the destroyer of dreams this time. :lol

Yup true. But the combo of elastic straps and velcro are way better than laces. I mean, how long have humans been tying their shoes with peices of string? There's gotta be something better. The weird thing is I see it a bit with kid shoes but so rare with adults. It's time to phase out the outdated technology of laces, like Nokia phones.

Remember how I said my US8 display pair basically falling apart? So I had an on-line chat with a fellow forum member local to me and he just bought a pair from that guy selling the V2s for about $150USD and he wanted to mod them, so I grabbed my US8s to talk him through what I had done and then this happened.

I think I broke it.

So what I intend to do is a step by step photo document of the sock toe slim mod without cutting the shoe up.

I disagree. I don't see Nike passing up the opportunity to release a Mag this year. It might not be the exact 2011 version but a Mag shoe will drop celebrating 2015 and BTTF 2. That's my personal opinion. Nike is into making money - no shoe is exempt.

Wish I could get v2s for $150!!!

sorry about yours. :(

Don't be sorry. These are gonna look amazing when they are done :)

I don't think NIKE will release the MAG in the form we know and love. FreddyTV is right, NIKE is a company that want to make money. They would e dumb asses not to take advantage of the fact that this year is 2015.

And I don't think that a re-issue of the MAG is going to devalue the 2011 MAG. That shoe is a collectible pure and simple. A shoe that actually increased in value since its release. It is the genuine article and no general release or re-issue can take that away from it or those fortunate enough to own a pair. If it did, then the V2 would be a very serious threat and as good as the V2 is after serious modding, it is not, nor will it ever be the 2011 NIKE MAG.

It think in a lot of cases, laces are more aesthetically pleasing.......Velcro or either gives off a childish/old person kind of vibe :lol

And phasing out nokia phones?!! I still use one on a daily basis!

This is going to be amazing!

Both shoes are now off the soles. Both toe boxes have been removed and I did this with no tearing of the fabric:) All traces of the original electrics have been removed. Did you guys know there is a 2nd rectangle hole hidden behind the heel cup directly below the charge port hole? This how the wires go into the sole.

Both heel cups have been removed and are ready for modding, again no tears. Sometime in the next week, I will pay a visit to a friend with a milling machine and get him to cut the letters M A G into a piece of perspex based on the graphic I used for hand cut letters. From there, I will be able to flood the cutout with elastomer to make a new master part. I can then mold and cast that. I am also going to thicken up the inside centre of the heel cup a bit and add a small lip to allow it to be attached to the outside of the mid-sole to give that "fat ass" look. This might take a few goes to get right. So the final result will be a modded heel cup with 25mm (1") tall MAG. I am keeping the original NIKE as I quite like those letters. I had to replace mine on my wear pair because in the build up process, I had to cover them in rubber. The goal is to keep the round shape, but make it stick out more and keep the texture of the part. I want to cast these in a light grey that is the same colour as my mid-soles are now. All that is needed is to apply splat and paint the letters. I may even be able to mix the colour needed first, cast the letters, let them cure before pouring the grey. This is how CP did his.

Both ankle bubbles have been removed from the heel cups for modding. Although I did attempt this a while ago, I was not happy with the results, so will be re-doing the master part and molds. Basically I want to keep the rim that prevents this part from poppoing out, but I want the depth to be the same as the part when it has been trimming and pushed through. I also want to make the profile a bit rounder front to back. Because there is both a left and right, I will need to be careful to keep the balance.

I'll post pics as soon as they are uploaded.

Looking great man :thumbsup

Thank you. This pair will get the full EL/LED treatment.

Looks so much better without the toe box! Thanks for the pics!

Agreed. I have been wanting to do this for a while, but was always concerned when I saw pictures of other's shoes that tore the fabric getting it off the rubber.

The easiest way to remove these uppers is to start at the back and work forward. I used a small heat gun that my wife bought for her craft work. It gets hot enough to melt the glue, but has not burned the shoe. I even used it so help remove the glue from the toe box layer. A quick circular motion and the glue went soft and the fabric just lifted off both shoes. You peel it back to the seam where the tongue is attached and cut it off. I've kept the inner layer only because I think from a wear pair perspective, you want more than just the single layer with your toes rubbing on that. The toe remains stiff enough to support itself, but slumps to give the sock toe as well.

Given I need to re-wire anyway, taking the whole upper off made sense. I learned more about how these are put together today than I have since they came out in 2012. The whole upper is only attached to the the mod-sole by a thin run around the seam at the base. It is basically the sides of the foot frame that hold the shoe in.

This is awesome, so much fuss and fiddling around saved by doing things this way.

If I ever got a second pair I would probably end up doing this.

Absolutely. I saw a few guy remove their uppers and thought why and how would they get them back together. Something I have done here is not to break things like the pink card frame that gives the shoe its shape. That layer may not seem important, but I am guessing it is the essential alignment of sole to upper.

I noticed with those opening up the toe, that they either really struggled or caused some damage to the rubber or fabric or both getting them apart. I think the strongest part of the gluing process (and this tear down) was getting the toe apart. The thing that made it easier was having the rest of the shoe to pull on whilst working my way forward. The heel breaks so easy. Almost too easy IMO.

This all started because I was explaining on a live chat how and where the battery is. As I pulled on the shoe to see what access point there were, the heel pretty much let go. From there, I worked my fingers underneath to discover there is no glue on the centre part of the foot frame. All the bonding is on the edges only. Because some of the shoe had already come undone on its own, I was able to just tease it along. By about the EL cutouts, things started to get tough and so out came the heat gun.
