Newbie recommendation - build trumpets

I would like to replicate about a dozen or so, similar to this. Should be durable to last several years of high schooler's handling. They would be held as if playing for periods of time, so can't be heavy. Thoughts on methods?

Welcome to the Forum, seruch!

Ask the woodshop Teacher to get his students to turn you the basic shape, if you can find blocks long enough of basswood i would recommend using it. Then take those over to the Art classes to have them decorated.

Just offer the Teachers car washes or dinner at a fancy restaurant, etc., whatever their vice is.

Just my idea.

Thanks. Is there a way to do this with either carbon fiber or fiberglass? I imagine the mouth ends of these to be around 3/8" diameter, and would be concerned to use basswood. Also, the bell ends at minimum should be hollowed out to a fairly thin wall. Again - worried of what the kids would do to them.
BTW, in terms of scale, I have to build two versions. Some would be approx. 36" long, and others around 45 to 48" long, with bell end being approx 6" diam., and 3/8" diameter at the thinnest before the mouthpiece.

Helpful thawts appreciated.

the first guy is on the right track get the taper shape mines the brass work turned for you in almost any wood. then you have a couple things you can do based on your buget. you can get copper foil or you can just use aluminum foil

first apply a layer of foil to the out side of the wood.

burnish it down smooth.

then apply one or two layers of fiber glass or carbine fiber then you can sand and smooth it down and ither paint or foil the out side.

you can do the brass work the same way and add it on over the main body.

the first layer of foil will act as a separation from your form. as well as add to the end detail.

I hope this helps

The round shape would require a fairly complex mold to do in a fiber material. Fiberglass would probably be pretty heavy, and carbon fiber would be expensive. You would need to know what you were doing AND have access to an Autoclave to cure it.

You MIGHT be able to vacuum form them from 2 parts and then bond them together. This would achieve the thin walls you are looking for.

But i think the wood piece is the best bet. You can hollow out the ends on the lathe pretty easily in wood.
