New Voyagers Omni

Yeah thanks Rob that sounds really good!! Just real quick and then I'll let you get back to your work. In your opinion what does the globe look like it was made from on the original prop? Resin, metal or something different I can't figure it out at all. thanks.

I dont know. Sometimes I think it is a real globe that was cut down, but when you compare the size of the continents that idea quickly goes out the window since they do not appear the same scale.
I'd like to think that they had some blank shells and when the director called for a specific location a painter custom made each one by hand.

Yeah Rob I'd say they were made from either wood or resin because they had to cut them all in half that would be practical. Its weird just cant tell by looking at it either. Wood or resin would be the logical choice to paint also.

Well, wood seems unlikely, but I don't know why they would use resin, since a pattern needs to be made first, then molded, then cast in resin. So why take all those steps when the pattern it self could have been used.
Most likely a plastic hemisphere that was painted.

Excellent point Rob. Well if your offering plastic Id love to see how both finished products look in relation to the pictures of the original omni. It going to be so interesting to see them down the road! Thanks!! :)

Hey Rob, I've been following the thread here for a while and I'm really excited for your Omni to be available. What is your best guess as to an unveiling.

Not sure yet, Right now I am still working on the internal designs.

Yeah Rob. I think I figured the globe out. Last night I was looking at screen still pics of the omni and looking at the early version that had then clear plastic dome covering the globe with black lines or crosshairs. I would bet that that piece is the same piece used for the actual globes for the omni props back then only of course painted as an globe. Its just my theory but if true then the globes were plastic acrylics. Of course any thoughts I'd love to hear.

Sounds about right. I sometimes think I can see raised continents, but that could be from thick paint on top of the layer of paint used for the blue ocean.

Yeah I know what you mean with the raised continents. Then on some of the globes then land is as flat as the ocean. The good part is that when you offer the acrylic or plastic globes you can use the same peice but obviously leave it clear but with the crosshairs for the dome covering it I am guessing. Very cool.

Hi again, Rob. Was just reading through this thread again and looking at your facebook page and had a question. Will the Omni still have the small magnet mounted inside the lid like on the original one that I had, or will it activate in a different way?

No, god no. I was so displeased with that method. This one will have a switch inside the body connected to the lids hinge. It will be invisible.

Good. As much as I liked practically everything about the old Omni, the magnet was a bit of a detraction. Sounds like you have it well in hand, so I'll butt out, be patient, and leave it to the expert!

It is going to be a tight fit, but I think I will be able to fit all the electronics. I have been designing a custom circuit board that will bolt into the body cavity of the omni.
So far it will have super bright SMD leds, a internal sound module and .5 watt speaker. A selector switch on the side that allows you to choose from red or green. A momentary switch on the plunger button that activates a swoosh sound. There will be room on the sound module for other effects, and I might offer a option of a extra switch for those who want added sounds.
The lid will be connected to a internal bar that spans in the distance between the lid ears and rotates a internal arm. I have not decided yet, but I am thinking a magnetic reed switch will be used at this location, and the rotating internal bar will hold a magnet that rotates into activation position when the lid is opened. I am also considering a dampened rotating switch that activates power, and gives the lid a bit more drag when opening it. The only problem is the body compartment is limited in space and most dampened switches are too big.
Ill post internal images when I have a better mock up.

56367642.jpgIt really sounds fantastic!! Speaking of the switch for the red and green light have you even noticed there is a switch on each side of the actual omni in the series? I guess one for the red light and the other for the green light. I thought I saw one on the right side and the other on the left side.

I dont know about everyone else, but Id like to make the switch less visible.
What does everyone think about the side switch having a brass vanity cover?

Like so many following this thread, the Omni is my Holy Grail of props and I'm loving every update. I think the vanity cover sounds like a great idea. Not necessarily screen accurate but it seems more practical. So far everything looks absolutely amazing and I can't wait to see this finished.
