New Voyagers Omni

As far as the dial assist rivet placement next to the month december goes, It all depends on which image you go by.
Take a look at these two

OK I see what you mean. Your going by the 1st version of the omni the earlier one. When looking at the shape of the lights in your 3d images as well as the two lines or grooves right above the lights, it is the 2nd version of the omni meaning the 2nd picture you just posted the pic on the right. Ours is a bit of a combo now.

This looks breathtaking. The Spouse has been craving an Omni for decades, and I've been keeping him up to date with this thread. I wasn't sure how he'd react to the "The year dial on polished brass is about $45" bit. He says even if it ends up costing a few hundred dollars he thinks it will still be worth it.

yes i too am interested to see what the finished product will cost

Here is the tricky part. The dial indicator does not exactly want to be where it should be.
This one is going to take some engineering.
I am thinking the real screen used omni had the indicator removed when the lid was closed. I'd like to tackle making it work though.

Hey Rob!

Interesting theory. What are your feelings about just going with the early/1st version of the omni with the small square plastic indicator the omni definatley opened and closed with that one!! Look at the end of the pearl harbor episode when buffalo bill cody rides off and Jeffery takes the omni off Boggs belt and opens it to turn the dial. Also it seems like in the case of all the shots that the omni opened and closed from a distance they used the 1st version. Like in Worlds Apart when Jeffery took the omni back from Edison and closed the lid. it was the 2nd version in the close up after Edision says "A green light now" they show the 2nd version with the other indicator. But they show edision holding up the first version of it after the green light dings. Ever notice that?? Also with the first version opened and close not problem in the episode "Agents of Satan". (Jeff opening the omni on the table) and ( the witch hunter guy opening it during the trial when he takes it from Boggs belt). Maybe we should just go with that one because the dials on your omni so far only match that one anyway. Please let me know your thoughts on all of this. Thanks!!

Interesting theory Rob!! What do you think about just going with the 1st/early version of the omni with the plastic square indicator. The lid definitely opened and closed no problem as we see in several of the episodes. Such as "Agents of Satan" during the trial when the lawyer/witch hunter takes the omni off Boggs belt and when Jeffery opens it up after they land on the seance table with the green light. Then all of the shots that the omni is open we see the early version being used. Such as in the episode "Worlds Apart". When Jeff and Edison are sitting at the table and Edison says "a green light now", he holds it up and it is the first version but then in the close up when they turn it around to the camera it is the second version with that other indicator we are having trouble with now. They Jeff snaps the omni shut that it obviously back to the early version. Your dials that you have are already the 1st versions dials with how the V and the rivets line up. The square plastic indicator will be no problem. What are your thoughts on all of this???

Well, regardless I will be making both indicators available. But you are correct, with out modifying the lid, the omni will not close unless you use the flat indicator.
I'll come back to engineering this indicator to work later. Perhaps I'll make a lower profile "not screen accurate" 3rd version so people who prefer this style can have a functioning one.

Something I also noticed, is the dome is much larger in this photo. Maybe the dome was just shaped differently in this version of the omni with the larger indicator. The large indicator can be seen sitting on the table next to the back plate.

True Rob. However, go look at some of the episode where they show a close up of the 2nd version of the omni with that indicator such as the episode, "Barriers of Sound" look at when Bogg is sitting at the table and looks at the omni it is not all the way closed when he opens it and then after they show the close-up he closes it and it does not close all the way. So I think your right that version of the omni did not close all the way. There are other scenes when they show it opening or closing with the close-ups and it does not close all the way. LOL I just went through a few episodes myself tonight. Never knew that!!

OK and another thing I would like to bring up. Speaking of the 1st version of the omni with the rectangle plastic indicator. As I have said I noticed that the dials we currently have on this omni line up like that early version. When we get to the point can you modify the shape of the lights to match that 1st version and also the grove in the brass right above the lights like in this picture??boggomni-pilot.jpg As you can see the lines in the groove go farther down to the top of the lights unlike the 2nd version like we have now and the light are shaped differently.

The groove I will modify.
As far as the lights go, could you expand on what you think needs to be changed? I have overlayed the 2 versions of the omni together, and I can only see a very slight difference in the outside space (widest part) of the lights, but not a difference in the shape or distance from the top of the lights to the top of the body.
I attribute the appearance of light shape and size differences to perspective and lens distortion.
I would be interested to see what you have though.

Ill get the overlay done so we can see for sure if there is really that much of a discernable difference. I really think the angle at which the omni is being viewed plays a role in how the openings of the lights look. But I do see changes from episode to episode.

Ive been working on the lid and the hinge the last few days. I have to get the bent shape of the hinge right. I was never happy with the previous way I did it on the last omni.

Yeah the lights do look different do you also see how the green and red lights light up the difference between the two versions meaning in the LEDs?? The lights are less brighter around the edges and you can see where the LED is positioned when it lights up on the early version. Hard for me to explain.

I'm not working on light color right now. I want to focus on the construction details first. When we get the parts finalized we can talk about electronics.

I was studying the font on the omni and discovered it is styled after a real font. Old English Text MT
It looks pretty close to the original. If I can find one that is better Ill change it.
What do you think though?

Wow! I do not remember ever watching the series, though i was in high school until 83. I have a couple of astrolabs/cosmolabs and this looks like it would fit right in, i am interested in one ;) great job!
