New Smooth-On Black Resin

When I was down at my local smooth-on dealer today I saw they have a new black resin called Smooth-Cast Onyx, a deep black plastic (much deeper and darker black than available before they say) that can be sanded and polished to a high gloss.

Should be very handy to use on some projects, like blasters and such.

I've gotten ahold of a test kit of this about three weeks ago from my distributor, and it's NICE!!! It can be polished to a high gloss.
They're not calling in ONYX for nuthin'!
I'm never going to have to paint a proton pack again.
Can't wait to get some bigger stuff cast. The cold casting possisblitlies are awesome with this stuff too.

be careful as most of the other black resins have Mercury in them..........the new Smooth-on is Mercury free!!!

Not much working time, but great for quick, open molds.

I powder my molds to get the best possible casting
when pressuring. Have you guys tried that to see what effect
powdered molds have on the BLACK FINISH ?

I'll probably try a trial kit anyway, but am curious ? :love

It gives it a great dusty look. So in my case, Silver Bullet casting powder and a bit of baby powder make my GB gear look down right screen used! I have yet to try any of the bronze or gold, but am excited to play around with a copper/worn brass look, just for giggles.

Let me correct myself, and get some better info for y'all.

There's only one type right now, but may be more down the road; slower cure time and what not. My distributors said slower curing times is a possibilty down the road. This one is mostly meant for cold casting.

The current ONYX is on the quick side, with a 2.5 minute pot time, and 10-15 minute demold time.
Pint kit sets you back about 30 bucks
Gallon kit is just over 89.
They claim its darker, stronger (can handle up to 200 degrees of heat!), and cheaper. It's also mercury free.
After using and experiencing the nasty side effects of Alumilite, I'm more than looking forward to the gallon I just ordered.
i'll get some pics up once I get some larger casts made up.

It was more me then them, to be sure.
I wasn't prepared properly while using it inside in a small basement appartment.
Probably shoulda cracked a window or two.:rolleyes
But still, Mercury free is a nice addition, since what I'll be casting is pretty big.
