Aloha all! I'm obviously new here (else I wouldn't be posting here). I've always been a bit of a maker at heart but I've come to a 1/3 life crisis (at least I hope I live a lot longer) and decided I might as well try and start down my own path. I'm in the process of getting access to a maker space but I have a few of my own tools. I hope to learn from everyone and share ideas!

Hi I'm Rowan, I'm new to prop making and have made a few on a budget that turned out well looking to make more and get better at it. Currently I've made some Indiana jones artifacts /Han solo blaster/Grafelx lightsaber attempt/ Tarentino Red apple Cigarette pack. My goals are to make more star wars props and eventually a decent Bladerunner gun.

I'm Michael, a long-time lurker, but have barely ever posted before and want to change that now.
Found this forum years ago when several people mentioned it on other boards and even Adam Savage included nods in his videos.

Mostly a science fiction and comics fan, with the occasional action movies and comedies sprinkled in.
Right now I'm trying to build a cartoon PKE Meter for the second time. Real Ghostbusters PKE Meter (my second try)

Next project plans, in no particular order, are:
  • An even more feature-complete Real Ghostbusters PKE Meter (animated display driven by a magnetometer, along with sound and working buttons).
  • An RC Aliens APC with lights and sound.
  • A Star Trek Tricorder set during the Lost Era (the era between Star Trek 6 and TNG.
  • A movie Ghostbusters PKE Meter with an animated display, sound and moving arms.
You can see some of the groundwork for that on GitHub and in this video (actual code is up to v0.33 by now):

OH! Do you have more info on the random image generator? I have some diabolical ideas for making props with no movie- just some stuff that LOOKS like it came from a movie. More freedom and lower cost of entry.

Something like this would go really well in one item I have in mind (some kind of important scanning tool).

Thanks!

PS welcome to the forum!

I'm uploading my progress to michael-zock/arduino_oled_image_generator so others can use what they need from it for their projects as well. Right now, it's just a coding playground, hence the slapped together look of the code.
Since that video I've added the following: features (each feature is a separate function).
v0.25 -Added functions to draw parametric sine and square waves.
v0.26 -Code cleanup of gauges, added foundation for display of composite curves
v0.27 -Added fake heartbeat curve.
v0.28 -Added generation of random bar charts
v0.29 -Added a simple 80's style target display.
v0.30 -Added function to draw DNA helix.
v0.31 -Added function to draw fancier square grid.
v0.32 -Added another simple 80's style target display.
v0.33 -Added simple horizontal compass

The image_generator.ino file contains the code in question and use this tutorial to get started: Guide for I2C OLED Display with Arduino | Random Nerd Tutorials
These small OLED displays are cheap as dirt (just browse Banggood or Aliexpress for "i2c oled"), you can get them in various sizes and aspect ratios (or use TFT modules instead). Since not every color's available, also think in terms of colored transparent sheets on top like the old Vectrex game console in the 80s.

BTW: In case the OLED modules look familiar, you probably watched the 2012 Dredd movie! (y) Dredd - Lawgiver Pistol

In my case, coding at this level is almost like having to survive with caveman tools, since I normally code web applications with much more comfortable ones.

Robots use language very similar to basic, which I learned in high school in the mid-80's. If I had stuck with computers, I'd probably be retired now...

Hi All,

I'm a big Star Wars fan. I love the card game of Sabacc and other SW games like Pazaak. Currently working on a Sabacc/cantina room at my house. Also, working on a Migs Mayfeld & Lobot cosplay costumes.

Cheers,

Jade

Hi all, I'm Andy, or Valentine - either is fine.

I've been a prop maker for about 7/8 years now and at the start of Feb actually went full-time. Given the pandemic and the rise of people wanting to make stuff at home, I focus on content that empowers people to do that - mainly through high quality 3D printable models (multiple of which are already being picked up and converted into metal props - you might have seen the metal Darksaber threads going around on here using my models), but also video tutorials, weekly learning streams, and much more.

Always lurked here as I've not had the time to participate much, but I'm looking forward to doing a lot more of that in the near future - you can check out all my channels at www.thecupid.club

Hello everyone, I am James from the UK.

I am very new to the world of prop replicas and the like, but have been a movie fan since I can remember. And also being a fan of Adam Savage and his great work I thought I would sign up to the RPF and see what the other great makers there are, whilst getting as much information I can on starting my own collection.

Like so many people I am a huge LOTR and The Hobbit fan, so that is where I would like start my prop replica collecting journey. Just the smaller pieces for now and then building up from there.

Would love to know the best places to look and who to speak to about starting my collection from these movies.

Thanks

Good evening,
I'm a long time purveyor of rare antiquities. My name is Eric, or Indy (to my friends). I have quite a bit of rarities, and I'm in the process of finishing off my basement in the Dr. Jones' office fashion. If I have time, I will post the final pics to this site. I look forward to discussing any topics of history and Indiana Jones with you! Thank you so much for your time!!!!

Hi all. I have always been a fan of RPF but have not actually logged in and joined in with you for the longest time! - mostly due to hectic work schedules. I live in Manchester UK and work as a prop maker/scenic painter and art director in TV - mostly children's TV - it's great fun but can be quite full on at times - often leaving little time for anything other than the job in hand. Throughout the past year I've had the time to resume some old hobbies and have been thinking of various props that I fancy making from scratch. I've always been a fan of the Alien films (the first two ---- mostly!) and I own a couple of v nice pieces - I'll share some pics. I've also had a few work projects recently that may be of interest to some members, most recently 2 separate sets of costume pieces that I made from EVA foam - Thor and Zeus characters (for an advert) I was really pleased with the results and plan on making more. I worked as prop maker on the feature film 'SOLIS' a few years ago (starring Stephen Ogg) where I was in my element as I was able to really go to town with the various props - again, really pleased with the results. (some pics attached)
I won't waffle on any more - just wanted to say hi! looking forward to familiarizing myself with this brilliant forum and hopefully sharing some tips and advice. Hope the pics are of interest - I also have a few questions to ask regarding a few things I'd like to build. Looking forward to chatting. Cheers david.
