New member wants Prop Display answers!

Afternoon ladies and gents, hope its a sunny one like here in London:cool

Bit of background info for you: Im 30, live in London, married, into collecting and love my movies. I generally collect Old pre cert videos, DVDs, Blu-rays and retro video games, and, in the last 10 years or so and when money allows, screen used props.

Now, my question: Ive recently purchased something from propstore, and Im now faced with the conundrum of how to display it. Im toying with the idea of attempting to do it myself, but dont really have the time. So, how do you lot out there get your props framed or displayed, do you go the DIY route, or go to a particular shop or speciality framer? Any help or info you can give me is appreciated:cheers

The prop in question is a pair of flippers from piranha 3d, screen used

I havent actually received them yet, paying monthly you see, but if you could imagine a flipper sized prop.......!

Yeah they have been removed from the site now, and I dont have a link or pic im afraid......I just wanted to know if you guys on here generally made your own display cases/frames or went to a specialist?

Personally, I make my own. I wouldn't bother to go to a professional. Get the creative juices flowing & with little cost, you'll come up with something cool :cool

(not literally of course .... but for yours, just as an example of the very first thing that shoots to mind .... (??) some sort of an aquarium, or involving glass & reflective material, small pebbles, whatever .....)

Yup, I would definitely go the (small) aquarium-style way. Fill it with an inch of sand, some pebbles, some fake seaweed, maybe a plastic skeleton of a piranha or two, stick a plastic crab in one of the flippers, put the COA in a frame, hang it next to your display. Single warm-white light from the top. Maybe covering the back of the aquarium, an image, as a background, showing the flippers on screen. If screencap not available, an appropriate theme-pic.

Im liking your idea, are you thinking it as a standalone display, or as a deep frame to hang on the wall? There are screencaps available, but stretched to the size youre talking about, they wont look good. How would you secure the items, what materials etc. Im intrigued!

You can choose if to have it 'plonked on a table', or hang it if you want. It will be heavy, with 1" of sand ! But it still can be done by using 2 very sturdy L-brackets. The overall size should not be very big, just about enough for the flippers to fit in, leaving no more than 6" surrounding the flippers all around. That would not be too large an enclosure.

Before you lift the thing onto the brackets, if you decide to hang it, buy double-sided sticky velcro. Put one part on the bracket, and the other on the bottom of the aquarium. That will prevent any accidental sliding off.

In fact, you can first choose the background pic (and I still believe you can inflate a screencap to that size if you increase the resolution to 400 or 600 before printing) and THEN choose the hight of the aquarium to fit the print.

If you get stuck with the print (if you decide to take this road anyway, I'm not the final word after all :lol) then do take that to a photo studio to inflate it for you on photo paper (non-glossy, as otherwise the lighting reflection will distract from the flippers).

Lastly, the lighting should come from the top, an elongated bulb with a shade, so it will shine on the display, not in the eyes.

Take a look at ScreenUsed.com for some ideas - I really like the way they build custom displays for their props.

I'm a firm believer in displaying the prop only, and nothing but the prop - Anything added in, such as plastic fish etc, will focus attention away from the screen used prop itself.
The prop (especially being a pair of flippers) need to have a commanding presence, which you will only achieve if you have them displayed only. By sticking them in a fish tank full of other stuff, it will just look like you have a fish tank!

I do all my own displays...whether it cutting the mattes with a pro cutting tool, or creating a sort of diorama, I think you'll feel a lot more proud of your display if you do it

Framing costs in the UK are such that it quickly works out cheaper to maker your own.

For the flippers I would mount them in a deep frame with a nice still showing them being worn ( but then any excuse to have a picture of Kelly Brook in a swim suit on the wall is always a good idea )
