New Elstree Studio documentary with discarded Graflex.

Hey Guys, I don’t know how to say this with out looking like a jerk.

So don’t take this as me being aggressive or anything but, let’s not pick on this guy. He bought it and owns it, what he chooses to do with it is all him

Even though I disagree with what he’s done on a historic level with the grips

I do love how he handles these things by hand, no gloves because in my eyes “it’s his, who cares”

But I just don’t want to see this thread turned into negative remarks on the guy.

And again I don’t want to come off aggressive towards anyone posting here, I feel responsible for starting this whole “he put grips on it” and don’t want him being picked on for it. He seems like a really nice guy who loves Star Wars like us all, and has the ability to purchase this stuff, god bless him.

I’ll never know what’s it like to afford things at this level lol

I agree 100%

Really, in the end, he just has a Graflex flash. No different from mine, yours or anyone else's.

The only thing that makes his different is that, for a time, it was owned by Elstree/LFL/prop/costume whatever.

It originally had grips on it, and it's meant to have grips on is. I would never say a bad word when Tom Spina and his team restore a famous/classic screen used mask or costume. They 'add stuff' to make the original screen-used prop look like it did when it was used in the movie.

With no grips it's just a flash handle. With grips, it's a lightsaber. Adding the grips doesn't change the story, history, or significance of what it is. Adding grips restores it to what it was when it was part of the Star Wars movie in 1976.

You’re not kidding james... the photos alone!

We know the chronicles photos of the hero Kenobi was taken in color thanks to the xmas wrapping paper..

Could you imagine if we had the Chronicles photos in color?!

I don't want to derail this thread, but could you please point me toward a thread discussing color photos of the Chronicles OWK saber that were used on wrapping paper? I don't believe I have ever heard that story or have seen photos of that wrapping paper. Thanks!

I don’t know if a thread off the top of my head but I own a roll myself, but it’s in my closet with all my bike stuff in front of it

A random google image search found it though

I think I must be in the minority of those that just don’t care about the stamping on the bottom of the 3 cell battery tube hilts. It just isn’t an itch for me. Besides, even if the stamping is ever discerned, it doesn’t mean it’s a “matched set” of the top to the 3 cell bottom....these parts seemed to be swapped around throughout filming.

Of course, I suppose for the ultimate recreation of the saber hilt in that scene, I can understand the obsessive need to know.

I'm with you I don't personally care about chasing the stamping, it does nothing for the aesthetic of the prop.

My two cents on the grips, I'm not against it but he should get better ones.

Hey guys the owner got back to me. As of right now I don’t have permission to post the edit of his video

He also told me he will eventually (soon) limit the video to only his friends list shortly...

If you haven’t seen it I suggest you do

Might have to grab a couple screencaps.

I'd put grips on the thing, too. He's not hurting anything. Hell, even if he used glue, it's easy enough to remove that without doing any harm to the already exceedingly beat-up flash handle.

A lot of folks can be misinformed about the props, some are just more obsessive than others, and I'm probably one of them. Haha

Although I'm not SO obsessive as to care at all about the stamping on the bottom of the tube, let alone the way it's oriented!

It WOULD be really nice to have Empire of Dreams in 4K! And man, would I love to watch every frame of unseen footage that exists, at least once! I bet there are a lot of great moments and memories buried in there that we'll never ever see.

The grips look like they could be a temporary display. He mentioned they are only taped on and he also says they are not in the corect spot. He put them in between glue marks cause he wanted to keep the look of how it looked with glue on the handle.
I can also garentee if any one of us owned that prop we would be watching a new hope frame by frame hoping and praying that we could screen match it. I’m sure he is planning on doing the same thing. It hasn’t been 100% confirmed it was a failed stunt. Sure it looks like it might have been but this is Star Wars we are talking about.are there better odds they took a failed stunt saber and threw it away or reused it somewhere else?remember that’s lukes stunt saber vader is using ,only thing it had in common with the mpp was a black tip they painted on it. We’re they gonna throw away a prop because it has a plate welded to the top?i doubt it.so yea the guy wants to try and screen match it,who here wouldn’t.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the guy knows just as much about these props if not more then any of us do,but making a video we’re he goes into detail about every little thing might not be what he wanted to do.im just glad I got to see a glimpse of his collection, there’s people who won’t even take pictures of there props.id kill for close up video of the v2,this guy was nice enough to share his video,we should show a little appreciation and not judge him on how he prefers to display his collection.

wow... halliwax... ruining the special things for everyone who's respectful... whatabutthole..

;)

Seriously though, I'd totally put t track on it too. I have no problem with that... also handling these things with your actual hands I'd also do, no problem. The white glove treatment I always found odd, unless your hands would somehow damage something or make more paint come off. But this particular prop... I'd handle that all day with no worries.

Also when I listened I heard him say, it's not screen used, but has the history. So we all already knew this about the prop.

Here's a transcription of what he had to say about the Elstree saber in his video:

"Now here... we've got kind of a significant piece - this is Luke's lightsaber from Star Wars: A New Hope. And, uh... this one is interesting, it, it's it's a one used in, in making Star Wars: A New Hope... uh... and, uh... and... ya know, there have been a couple other sabers that have come up for sale - what's awesome about this though, is it's the one that has amazing provenance. Um... and so, uh, you know basically has a lot of really good documentation from uh... ya know the crew members who, you know who had handled it and uh... and - have not been able to screen match it yet, but... uh, but ya know potentially will be able to do that at some point, but you know a Luke saber from the first movie to me is like one of the top things you can have in Star Wars and I was very thrilled, uh to pick this up in the last year. Um... you know, um - and by the way, the, the orig - the only part that's not original on it are the grips. So when I got it you can see the glue marks from the handle and, and so what I did was... I actually put a replica grips on it, just to make the look better, but I didn't want to damage it so I have it with tape... and then I, actually put the grips inter - interleaved between the glue marks, so you can sort of see up close... the glue is where the original grips were, and then I guess they must have torn the grips off to put on another saber, but so I wanted to make sure the glue marks were visible, but I also wanted to have it displayed nice in a reversible way and so if by taping on the grips I could like pull them off at any time and then no damage to the piece. But um, yeah this one very quickly... you know - it's very... rare that I pick up something that sort of makes the Top Ten or Twenty of my pieces, but, this definitely is way up there, uh, you know, Luke's saber from A New Hope is sort of a... you have to say a pretty significant thing to own. Um... especially one like this that has just amazing documentation behind it."

Yeah, it took me a little while. But what else is there to do right now? ;)

No idea, Greg is now thinking he saw somewhere they are color edited versions, may not be the true thing

Yeah, while there are undoubtedly behind-the-scenes and publicity photos that are in both color and black & white, I have to agree that the Lightsaber prop photos are all native B&W photos -- I got schooled on that when I first joined way back when.

I'm not sure if I'm missing anything on that wrapping paper.. the Obi still looks B&W, and the Barbican looks like it's taken from a specific photo, I might have it buried somewhere. That was a color photo, and a recent one.

I posted a picture of it a few posts up

Yea - it looks like the Obi Wan is black and white, the original chronicles photo, with a green blade edited on. The Barbican pic was a color shot from the 90s or 2000s. I don't get why people are saying the Obi Lightsaber on the wrapping paper is colored?
