This has totally escaped my mind! Now with the wannawanga shop back open I have to grab me some!
 
I’m surprised no one else is obsessing over those rivets? It was popular on here for a few days, then disappeared

I really wonder what’s up with them.. is it a random modification from the pervious camera owner?

Or did production do that for some reason?


I think everyones just pretending theyre not there, no one wants to drill extra holes in their vintage Graflex :lol:

I searched my photo archive, and the only image that clearly shows the two rivets is this one (same as yours above). It's in between the tracks in the back at 10 o'clock position looking from the back with bunny ears at 12 o'clock.
To me they seem like regular 3mm pop rivet size (7mm head diameter), but I need to double check that.
It looks like they are slightly covered with the T-tracks, which suggests that they were riveted before the T-tracks were placed.

Agreed—the edges of the T-Track appear to partially lay over the rivets. I wonder if they originally intended the D-Ring to be mounted on the side of the hilt vs. the bottom and then had a change of heart? It would make sense to me...2 rivets in the D-Ring mount; two rivets on the side of the hilt. Perhaps they went ahead and plugged the two holes they had drilled in the side with the rivets after changing the intended D-ring location?

But if the tracks are on top of the rivets that would mean the rivet and more importantly the holes predate the grips.....so why wouldn't they have just covered the holes with the grips?
 
It's not that easy to remove the rivets. And time is money.
That's true. I guess I was just thinking if they were trying to cover up holes they had made, why not just cover them with t-tracks instead of filling them with rivets? But then again maybe they hadn't decided on the t-track yet for the grips? What I do for a time machine......
 
I've seen some strange things on Photo equipment. The only Kobold I've ever owned had a threaded rod welded on, sticking out the side.

I've also seen DIY battery compartment fillers, extra screws drilled places, etc. My gut tells me these were there already, and they didn't take the time to remove them. Just slapped the grips on. The severed hand saber also has the dual hole Kobold plug lined up with the side of the T track.

That being said, these could be rivets or a little attempt at a dual pin socket for some photography use. Either way, my bets are that this is a great way to ID the original flash should it ever come around.

Yeah, it seems that photographers loved to jury-rig and customize their gear. In the course of even just searching for non-OT used flash gear for custom sabers I've also seen a lot of weirds (and cool) things.
 
I tried to find out the sizes of those lost rivets. Here is the result of some finicky 3D perspective matching efforts. The size is just what I ended up with. I'd say that the diameter is somewhere between 4 and 5mm. So this is smaller than I thought first: smaller than a 3mm rivet. Perhaps 2mm. I don't have those so I'll have to find the correct size in order to test it.

Oh and by the way: the location is not certain because the clamp is rotated 180 degrees from the usual hero position and this makes the position of the bottom part with the D-ring assembly uncertain.

EDIT:
If this is image was taken during the same photo shoot as the toe pic than they both have the same configuration which makes my position relative to the D-ring correct.

I wonder if these 2 rivets were used to lock the battery spring in place? Maybe the spring was loose and kept losing power to the flash?

My hypothesis remains that the propmakers were reinforcing the D-ring attachment in some way. That the placement is right next to the d-ring rivets just reinforces my suspicions. Given that we know they had at least one other 3-cell bottom without rivets/holes in the sides, it just doesn't make sense that these would end up on the hero unless they were supposed to be there.
