Never Forget! September 13th 1999

Bain getting a present of a replica jacket last year. She's seems really happy with the fans.
And I just learned September 13th is her birthday.

I only just started watching this show after so many years hearing about it (all episodes are also on Youtube), and what a bummer all those years missing out on this!

I love this kind of now "retro" sci-fi. Space: 1999 really was TOS's spiritual successor and the precursor to Star Wars. And no small part due to the aesthetics that you can trace back to 2001. You can really see shift in tone in design in all of sci-fi, and this being one of those important markers.

Sort of an opposite to Trek too, they were not on a journey of choice, and it was all about survival.

It's funny that this was marketed as a kids tv show in the UK on its first run. It used to be shown on Saturday mornings. Can you imagine a 7 year old (that would be me) watching "Dragons Domain"?

I've never seen it but I scored 2 of the spaceships at a garage sale around 1982, they were great stand-ins for star destroyers!

I think a lot of us kids then got freaked by that one. The burned corpses and hypnotism of the victims to their deaths?
It was a Captain Ahab in space tale but with a horror aspect.

Stanley Kubrick had a lot of worries that Space 1999 was too close from 2001 A Space Odyssey and would hurt that movie. (Same crew and model makers were working on Space 1999 at the time also didn`t help)

Never heard that one and I highly doubt that.

2001 was out 5 or 6 years before Space 1999.

Only a few who worked on Space 1999 worked on 2001 as well

I know Lucas backed off on some early Falcon designs as he was reminded a little too much of Eagles.

Yep. The original "pirate" ship. I think the model was actually built (or a prototype of it) and was later remodeled to be used as the blockade runner.

1975 Telex written by Stanley Kubrick: '' It would appear that Space 1999 may very well become a long-running and important television series.
There seems nothing left now but to seek the highest possible damages...The deliberate choice of date only two years away from 2001 is not accidental and harm us"

With Brian Johnson as the main model maker + the 2001 overall look and design of the space ships or Moonbase for example (looks a lot like the Clavius Moon base!) it was, somewhat viewed as too close to 2001 in many aspects by Kubrick.

Brian was just one of many assistants on 2001, but Stanley was protective of his films.

Apples and oranges imo as 1999 was not even in the same league as 2001, but their are similarities.

Sounds like Stanley on overdrive :D

I assume the telex is to some shark at MGM
