    Hey guys,

It's been awhile since I posted on here, I post most stuff on my prop page on Facebook or on instagram. I figured I'd share one of my latest projects with you guys here.

I've used the limited screen grabs I could get off Netflix and have 3D modeled the Daredevil cowl to the best of my ability, it's far from "perfect" but I'm happy with it.

Yes, I know certain parts are fabric, but I plan on texturing those sections post print, so when I mold the whole thing, I can fake those sections when I cast the final in urethane. I'll then ink and black wash the various sections to give them depth, color differentiation, etc.

Here's the final render in a few various angles, etc. :)

    Thanks guys!

No, files won't be free. Not selling the files... As I stated, this will be printed, which has been sent off already. :) Once I receive, I'll extensively clean, and them mold for urethane castings in the future. :)

Helmet master is being printed as we speak. I'll post pics when the print arrives, then the cleanup process will begin. :)

Not yet, just sent it to print on the 4th. That's only 3 business days, ha! They're quick, but not that quick. I'll post photos of the raw print as soon as it arrives. :)

    You tell him!

    This is really nice work.
Would it be possible to see a screenshot of the model on the virtual platform in whatever software you'll be using to print? I'm interested in how it will be sliced, supports, that kind of thing.

I'm not printing this on an FDM printer. Even though the company I work for makes and manufactures our own. Just like my Marvel Now cap helm this print is being printed on an SLS machine at shapeways. I even block out the eyes, mouth, and build in a stand to make molding post-cleanup a breeze! ;) just wait and see. :)

Raw print arrived. Lots of cleanup and texturing ahead of me. And for those that don't understand, the mouth, eyes and the * all around the bottom are to aid me in molding later on after cleanup.

Beautiful work! Do you mind if I ask how much it cost to print at Shapeways? Curious to how they compare for a print of that size.

Finally got around to starting the clean up process. This is about a couple of hours into it. Getting there. Going to get the entire thing nice and silky smooth, then I'll apply the texture to the portions that need it, then she'll be primed further, sealed and molded. :)

Thanks! Wait till the master is ready for molding, you haven't seen anything yet.

Thanks! It's all about having patience, and a crap-load of elbow grease, lol.

I use Blender, what sort of process are you meaning? The modeling? Or the printing? Or the cleanup, and molding? All of which you can find info on youtube for. I've been doing this for years now, so a lot of it is just practice making perfect. ;)

Thanks! It will be the best, hands down. Wait till I texture the appropriate portions.

Sean, thanks brother! It's going to look gorgeous atop your suit. We might have to team up more often, that phone call is well over-due.

Yes, I mean the modeling. Wow, that's done exclusively with Blender? Nice. :thumbsup

I assume the process is something like this. Low poly base model, sub-surf modifier, edge crease and/or additional edges for sharpness. I wondered if you used ZBrush, or the sculpting tools in blender at all?

Re: Netflix Daredevil Cowl Helmet - 3D Model - Printing and Molding Soon

    Hey,

Yeah, I don't use Zbrush. And that's not exactly what I do. I usually model in most of what you see by hand. I am very * retentive, so I don't mind the nit-picky nature of it. ha! But yeah, I deff use sub surf modifier's but often have to add in some of the extra geometry, etc as layered elements etc.

Made some good progress on the cleanup. Just need to texture the "cheeks" and then spray and seal the entire thing.

Nice work bud, so how are you getting that material so smooth, do you sand it or are you using some kind of thinner?

When modeling, how do you make sure the size of the final print will be correct? Do you have a digital model of a head you reference, or is it solely based off of picture references/screencaps from the show? Or maybe even something else?

Well I've already done several helmet prints, that have been cleaned, molded and worn, so I usually use those for a basis of size, proportions. But this time around I had a 3d scan of my head. Seen here: https://p3d.in/vsE8p And no, this was done solely by those few reference shots from the last 10 mins of the final episode haha.

Ah okay. Im guessing you used 123D Catch? Also how did you get rid of your hair in the model? Or do you have a shaved head?

    Didn't use 123D catch.

Used a 3d scanner we built at work. Did two passes, one with skin hood one, one without, spliced the two together so I'd not have flattened ears.
